Why has my basin come loose from the wall, and how do I fix it properly?

Why tightening the bolts is almost always the wrong response, what to put behind each wall type, and refixing the basin so it carries the load properly.

Short answer

A basin comes loose because the fixings have lost their grip in the wall, not because the nuts undid themselves. Take the basin off, find out what the wall actually is, and put in fixings that reach something solid โ€” resin anchors in masonry, a fixing through to the masonry behind dot-and-dab, or a noggin or a frame in a stud wall. Then bed the basin back and reconnect.

Do this first

The load on a basin's wall fixings is not the weight of the basin. It is the leverage of somebody putting both hands on the front rim, which multiplies that weight several times and pulls the top fixings straight out of the wall. Plasterboard cannot take that repeatedly, which is why basins on stud walls come loose and basins on solid brick generally do not. The drawing shows what each basin type is really asking of the wall.

Safety

A ceramic basin that comes off a wall is heavy, it breaks into sharp pieces, and it takes the tap and the supply pipes with it. Stop using a basin that moves noticeably, do not lean on it, and keep children away from it until it is refixed. Tightening the existing bolts on a basin whose fixings have failed does not make it safe and can crack the ceramic.

How each basin type actually carries its weight

Step by step

  1. Find out how it is moving.Push the front rim gently down and side to side. A basin that pivots at the wall with the top edge lifting has fixings pulling out. One that rocks on its pedestal has a fixing loose but the wall still gripping. One that moves as a unit with the pedestal has never been fixed to the floor. Each needs a different response.
  2. Do not simply tighten the bolts.If the fixing has lost its grip in the wall, tightening the nut pulls it further out and puts a point load into the ceramic. If the wall is fine and the nut is genuinely just loose, tightening is correct โ€” but check the fixing is solid in the wall first by trying to turn the bolt, not the nut.
  3. Isolate the water and disconnect.Close the isolating valves on the tap tails, or turn off at the stopcock. Undo the tap connectors and the trap with a bucket underneath. Free the waste connection so the basin can come away completely โ€” you cannot fix this properly with the basin in place.
  4. Take the basin off and look at the fixings.Undo the wall bolts and lift the basin away. Look at what comes out with them. A plug that emerges with crumbled plaster on it, an expansion plug in a hole that has become a crater, or a fixing that was only ever in the board are all telling you the wall was never adequate.
  5. Identify the wall honestly.Drill a small exploratory hole beside the old fixing and look at the dust and the feel. Red or grey dust with hard resistance is masonry. White or grey powder with the bit dropping into a void after 12 to 15mm is plasterboard, either on dabs or on studs. Push a bent wire into the hole to tell dot-and-dab from a stud wall โ€” dabs leave a small void, a stud wall leaves a large one.
  6. Fix into masonry with a resin anchor or a long expansion plug.For a basin, a resin-bonded stud into solid masonry is the strongest and most forgiving option, particularly in old soft brick where an expansion plug crumbles the hole. Failing that, a long expansion plug of a decent diameter into sound brick โ€” not into the mortar joint.
  7. For dot-and-dab, reach the masonry behind.The board is on dabs of adhesive with a void behind. A fixing that grips only the board will fail again. Use a long fixing that passes through the board and the void and anchors properly in the masonry, and use a sleeve or a spacer so tightening does not crush the board.
  8. For a stud wall, fit a noggin or use a frame.If there is a stud in the right place, fix into it with a substantial screw. If there is not, the honest answers are to open the wall and fit a horizontal noggin between the studs at the fixing height, or to fit a concealed basin frame. Heavy-duty toggles into plasterboard are not a substitute for a basin โ€” they carry the weight and not the leverage.
  9. Check the pedestal is doing its job.On a full pedestal, the bowl should sit down on the pedestal so the pedestal takes some of the load, with the pedestal itself fixed to the floor. If there is a gap, the pedestal is decoration. Pack it or bed it so it is in contact, and screw it down.
  10. Refit level, and bed the basin.Offer the basin back with a helper, check it is level in both directions, and tighten the fixings evenly and moderately โ€” the ceramic is the weak part now, not the wall. A smear of silicone between the basin's back edge and the wall bonds and seals, but it is not a fixing.
  11. Reconnect and check for leaks.Reconnect the tap tails and the trap hand-tight, open the isolating valves slowly, and run the tap while watching every joint. Then push down on the front rim and check nothing moves.
  12. Seal the top joint last.A neat bead of sanitary silicone where the basin meets the wall or the tiles, applied once the basin is fixed and not moving.

Common mistakes

  • Tightening the fixings on a basin whose plugs have pulled out โ€” It pulls them further out, enlarges the hole, and puts a cracking load into the ceramic around the fixing.
  • Reusing the same holes with a slightly bigger plug โ€” The hole is already damaged and oversized. Move the fixings if you can, or use a resin anchor which fills and bonds the damaged hole.
  • Relying on the pedestal to hold the basin โ€” It props and it hides pipes. A full pedestal shares some load only if the bowl actually sits on it.
  • Using plasterboard toggles for a basin โ€” They are rated for a static hanging load, not for the repeated leverage of somebody putting their weight on the front of a basin.
