Short answer
Check the per-app data breakdown in settings — it is almost always one or two apps. Video, photo backup and automatic app updates are the usual culprits, and all three can be restricted to wifi.
Data disappears into a small number of things, and the phone will tell you exactly which. Guessing leads people to restrict the wrong apps while the actual cause carries on.
Step by step
- Look at the per-app data breakdown. Both platforms show mobile data used per app for the current period. This identifies the cause in seconds rather than by guesswork.
- Reset the counter at the start of your billing month.Otherwise the figures cover an arbitrary period and do not match your allowance. Set it to match the billing cycle.
- Restrict photo and cloud backup to wifi. The most common single cause. Backing up photos and videos over mobile data consumes an allowance very quickly, and it happens silently.
- Set app updates to wifi only.Automatic updates over mobile data can be several gigabytes a month. Both app stores have a setting for this.
- Reduce video quality.Video is by far the largest consumer. Streaming and social apps have quality settings, and most have a specific "use less data on mobile" option.
- Turn off background refresh for apps that do not need it.Apps updating themselves while unused. Restrict it to the few where it genuinely helps.
- Turn off auto-play video where you can.Social and news apps play video automatically as you scroll. It is often the largest invisible use, and turning it off is a single setting.
- Set a data warning and a cap. Both platforms can warn at a threshold and stop mobile data at a limit. A backstop that costs nothing to set up.
Tips
- Check whether tethering is on. A laptop connected to your phone consumes data at desktop rates, and it is easy to leave running.
- Download music, podcasts and video on wifi before travelling. It removes the largest consumer entirely.
- Some plans zero-rate specific services. Worth knowing which, because it changes what you need to restrict.

Video by a wide margin, then photo and cloud backup, then automatic app updates. All three can be restricted to wifi in settings.
How do I find which app is using my data?
Both platforms show a per-app breakdown in the mobile data settings. Reset the counter to match your billing cycle so the figures are meaningful.
