Short answer
Look for smart queue management, adaptive QoS or a bufferbloat setting on your router and enable it, telling it your real line speeds. That keeps everyone responsive while the line is busy, which is what people actually want. Old-style per-device priority rules are far less useful and are usually not needed once smart queueing is on.
The complaint behind this question is almost never about total data. It is that when one person starts a large download or a console update, everyone else's calls break up and pages stop loading. That is a queueing problem, not a capacity problem: the greedy transfer fills the router's buffer and everything else waits behind it. Fixing the queue fixes the symptom far more effectively than trying to ration devices.

- Confirm the pattern.Does the problem appear only when a specific activity starts, and clear when it stops? That is queueing. A house that is slow all evening regardless of what anyone does is contention or a line problem instead.
- Measure latency while the line is busy.Run a loaded latency or bufferbloat test. A big rise in latency under load confirms the diagnosis and gives you a before figure to compare against.
- Turn on smart queue management.In the router settings this may be called SQM, adaptive QoS, dynamic QoS, smart queues or an anti-bufferbloat option. Enable it and enter your actual measured line speeds — not the advertised ones. Setting it slightly below your real speed is what gives the router control of the queue.
- Retest and compare.Latency under load should now stay close to its idle figure. Peak download may drop by a few per cent. That trade is almost always worth it.
- Only then add per-device priority if you still need it.If the router has a device priority list, put the work laptop or the console at the top. This helps in specific cases, but with smart queueing on it usually makes little difference, and a badly configured priority list can make things worse.
- Deal with the actual hogs directly.Console and computer updates are the biggest single cause. Both major consoles and both desktop platforms allow you to schedule or pause updates, and consoles usually allow a download bandwidth limit. Setting that limit is more effective than any router setting.
- Move backups and syncs off the working day.Cloud backup and photo sync run continuously by default and consume upload, which is the smaller number. Scheduling them overnight removes most of the remaining contention in a working-from-home household.
Tips
- If your line is genuinely fast — several hundred megabits — smart queueing may be disabled or unavailable because some routers cannot process the queue at that rate. In that case per-device limits on the greedy devices are the practical route.
- Streaming services adapt their quality to whatever is available and rarely cause this problem. Large file transfers, game downloads and cloud backups are the usual culprits.
- A wired connection for the device that must not stutter is worth more than any priority setting, because it takes that device out of the wireless contention entirely.

Does QoS make my internet faster?
No. It makes it fairer and more responsive. Total throughput usually falls very slightly. What changes is that a big transfer stops crowding out everything else.
Should I set a bandwidth limit per device?
Only as a last resort or for a known offender such as a console. Hard limits waste capacity when the device is the only thing using the line, whereas smart queueing shares dynamically.
My router has no QoS settings at all. What then?
Deal with the sources: schedule updates, limit console download rates, move backups to overnight, and wire the device that matters. If it remains a real problem, a router with smart queue management is a modest and effective upgrade.
