Do I need a power flush, or will a chemical flush do?
Two very different treatments sold under similar names, what each actually removes, and how to decide which your system needs without paying for the wrong one.

Short answer
A chemical flush circulates a cleaner through the system for days or weeks, then drains, refills and inhibits — good for mild contamination and cheap. A power flush pumps water at high velocity through each radiator in turn with a magnetic separator, physically shifting settled sludge — needed where radiators are cold at the bottom and the deposit will not move on its own.

Both treatments exist because sludge comes in two states: suspended in the water, and settled as a solid layer at the bottom of radiators and in dead legs. Chemicals can deal with the first. Only velocity deals with the second. Working out which state your system is in is what stops you paying for a power flush you did not need, or wasting money on a chemical clean that cannot reach the problem.

Step by step
- Establish how bad it actually is.Bleed water into a glass and test it with a magnet. Feel every radiator top to bottom while the system is hot. Note how often you bleed and whether the boiler kettles. Mildly discoloured water with radiators heating evenly is a very different case from black water and radiators cold across the bottom third.
- Understand what a chemical flush does.A cleaning chemical is dosed into the system and circulated with the heating running, typically for a week or two. It loosens and suspends light deposits and scale. The system is then drained, refilled, and dosed with inhibitor. It disturbs nothing mechanically and can be done alongside normal use.
- Understand what a power flush does.A pumping unit is connected to the system, usually at the pump head or across a radiator pair, and drives water at high velocity — reversing the direction repeatedly — through each radiator in turn while a magnetic separator captures what comes out. It physically shifts settled sludge that circulation alone cannot lift. It takes most of a day.
- Match the treatment to the evidence.Discoloured but flowing water, radiators heating fully, no cold bottoms: chemical clean and re-inhibit. Radiators cold across the bottom, black magnetic water, kettling, repeatedly failing pumps and valves: power flush. Somewhere in between: chemical clean first and reassess, since it is far cheaper.
- Ask what is included.A proper power flush includes each radiator flushed individually in both directions, a magnetic separator on the return, a system cleaner, a final water quality test, and inhibitor at the end. A quote that does not mention inhibitor is not a complete job — the system will start corroding again immediately.
- Consider the age of the system.On a system over about thirty years old with original radiators, power flushing sometimes exposes existing weaknesses. Have that conversation up front, agree what happens if a radiator starts weeping, and know where the stopcock is on the day.
- Fit a magnetic filter at the same time.Whatever treatment you choose, a magnetic filter fitted on the return afterwards captures the magnetite that continues to form and keeps it out of the boiler. It is the difference between a clean that lasts and a clean you repeat in four years.
- Get the water tested afterwards.A competent engineer will test the system water after treatment and confirm the inhibitor level. That test is the evidence the job worked. Many boiler warranties now require both a filter and demonstrated water treatment.
Common mistakes
- Agreeing to a power flush without any diagnostic evidence — It is a significant cost and it is sold routinely. A glass of bleed water and a magnet is evidence; 'systems of this age usually need one' is not.
- Flushing and not inhibiting — Freshly cleaned steel in oxygenated water corrodes faster than dirty steel. Without inhibitor the system starts producing magnetite again immediately and the money is wasted.
- Flushing without fitting a filter — The filter is what keeps the boiler protected between cleans. Most boiler manufacturers now require one to maintain the warranty.
- Expecting a flush to fix a design problem — Radiators too small for the room, a system that was never balanced, or a boiler that is undersized will still be wrong after a flush. Clean water fixes dirty water problems only.
Alternatives
- Chemical clean and re-inhibit: Cleaner circulated for days or weeks, then drain, refill and dose with inhibitor. Inexpensive, non-invasive, and effective on light to moderate contamination. Cannot shift a settled deposit in the bottom of a radiator.
- Power flush: High-velocity flushing of each radiator in both directions with a magnetic separator. The only thing that physically removes settled sludge. Takes a day, costs substantially more, and carries a small risk of disturbing weak joints on very old systems.
- Remove and flush individual radiators: Where only one or two radiators are silted, taking them off and flushing them outside with a hose is cheap and very effective. Often overlooked, and a reasonable middle path on an otherwise healthy system.
- Magnetic filter plus inhibitor, no flush: On a system with only mild discolouration and no performance problem, fitting a filter and correcting the inhibitor level may be all that is needed. Cheapest option and the right one more often than people are told.
Questions people ask
How often does a system need this?
A properly inhibited system with a magnetic filter should not need repeat flushing at all — the filter and the inhibitor keep the water in condition. Repeated need for flushing means something is still letting oxygen in.
Can I do a chemical clean myself?
Adding cleaner and later inhibitor through a radiator's bleed point is within reach of a competent householder on a system with accessible radiators, and the products carry clear instructions. The drain and refill in between is the part that needs care, particularly repressurising a sealed system afterwards.
Will it make my radiators hotter?
If they are cold at the bottom because of settled sludge, yes, noticeably. If they are cold because of balancing, air, a stuck TRV or being undersized, no. That is exactly why the diagnosis comes first.
