Do I need a primer or slurry under porcelain paving?
Why porcelain will not bond to a mortar bed on its own, what the slurry primer actually does, and applying it so slabs do not lift or rock later.

Short answer
Yes. Porcelain has almost no porosity, so a mortar bed cannot key into it and the slab will debond and rock. Brush a cement-based slurry primer onto the clean back of each slab immediately before laying, and lay it into a full wet mortar bed while both are still workable. Skipping this is the single reason porcelain patios fail.
Natural stone and concrete slabs are porous. A mortar bed sucks into their backs and grips mechanically. Porcelain has a water absorption close to zero — it is what makes it frost-proof and stain-proof — and the same property means mortar sits against it with nothing to hold on to. The slurry primer is a chemical bridge between the two, and it is not optional.

Step by step
- Get the base right first — the primer fixes nothing else.Compacted sub-base, correct fall away from the building, and finished level at least 150mm below any damp proof course. Porcelain is thin and unforgiving: it will crack over a void where a thicker concrete slab would survive.
- Clean the back of every slab.Porcelain slabs carry a fine dust and sometimes a release film from manufacture. Brush or wipe the back clean and let it dry. Slurry over dust bonds to the dust.
- Mix the slurry to the maker's ratio.Usually a thick, brushable, single-cream consistency. Too thin and it does not build a coat; too thick and it will not wet the slab. Mix only what you can use before it starts to stiffen.
- Prime and lay wet on wet.Brush a full, even coat over the whole back of the slab, then lay it into the mortar bed immediately. Both must still be workable when they meet. Slurry that has been allowed to skin over has lost the bond you applied it for.
- Use a full mortar bed, never spots.A continuous bed across the whole slab footprint, ridged with the trowel and laid slightly proud so the slab beds down fully. Voids under porcelain are where water sits, freezes and cracks the slab.
- Tap down and check as you go.Rubber mallet, straightedge across to the neighbouring slabs, and the fall checked constantly. Once the mortar has gone off you cannot adjust it, and porcelain is too hard to lift and clean for reuse easily.
- Keep the faces clean throughout.Wipe any slurry or mortar off the face immediately with a damp sponge. Cement residue that dries on porcelain is difficult to remove and can etch a matt surface.
- Joint with a product suited to porcelain, once the bed has set.Leave the bed at least 24 hours. Use a jointing compound that states porcelain compatibility, and follow its temperature and moisture requirements exactly — porcelain does not absorb, so residue does not soak away and must be removed before it cures.
- Cut wet, always.A wet-cutting saw for straight runs. Dry cutting porcelain produces silica dust, chips the glazed edge and burns the blade.
Tips
- Buy the slurry, the bedding mortar and the jointing compound as a matched system from the same manufacturer where you can. They are designed to work together and the technical support is then one phone call.
- Prime and lay one slab at a time. Priming a stack of slabs in advance guarantees some of them will skin over.
- Porcelain slabs are usually calibrated to a consistent thickness, which makes them much easier to lay level than natural stone. Use that — set a string line and work to it.
- Do not lay porcelain in frost or in strong direct sun. Both interfere with the slurry and the bed curing properly.
- Keep two or three spare slabs from the same batch. Porcelain patterns change between production runs.
Common mistakes
- Treating porcelain like a concrete slab — The whole difference is porosity. Everything that works on a porous slab — spot bedding, an unprimed back, a sand-cement joint brushed in dry — fails on porcelain.
- Priming the mortar bed instead of the slab — The bond that is missing is the one between mortar and slab. The primer has to be on the slab, and it has to be wet when the two meet.
- Letting cement dry on the face — Porcelain will not absorb it, so it sits on the surface as a hard film. On a textured or matt finish it is extremely difficult to remove without damaging the surface.
- Dry cutting with an angle grinder — Silica dust, a chipped glaze edge and a ruined blade. Wet cutting is quicker, cleaner and the edge is usable.
If it doesn't work
Slabs rock or sound hollow within a year
Cause: No primer, or the primer was allowed to dry before the slab was laid, or the bed was spot-laid. — Fix: There is no adhesive fix from above. The slab has to be lifted, the back and the bed cleaned back to sound material, and it must be re-laid on a fresh full bed with fresh slurry.
A slab has cracked across the middle with no impact
Cause: A void under the slab and a load on top of it — usually spot bedding. — Fix: Replace the slab and re-bed it fully. If several have cracked, the whole bedding method was wrong and the area needs re-laying.
White or grey haze on the surface
Cause: Cement residue from the slurry, the bed or the jointing left to dry on the face. — Fix: A proprietary cement residue remover suited to porcelain, used according to its instructions and tested on a spare slab first. Acid cleaners can dull some finishes.
Joints have failed within a season
Cause: A jointing compound not rated for porcelain, applied outside its temperature range, or onto a bed that had not set. — Fix: Rake out and re-joint with a porcelain-compatible product in the right conditions.
Questions people ask
Can I use tile adhesive instead of slurry and mortar?
Over a solid, level concrete base, yes — an exterior-grade flexible tile adhesive of the right class is a recognised method for laying porcelain and is often better than mortar. Over a sub-base, no: you need the mortar bed to take up the level, and the slurry to bond to the slab.
Does the slurry go on the base as well?
Some systems specify a slurry coat over a concrete base as well as on the slab. Follow the specific product's instructions — the invariable part is that the slab back must be primed.
Is porcelain worth it over natural stone?
For a patio, often yes: it does not stain, does not need sealing, is frost-proof and stays the colour you bought. The trade-offs are cost, a harder and less forgiving material to cut and lay, and a surface some people find looks less natural.
