How do I plane end grain without splitting the corner off?
End grain blows out at the far corner because there is nothing supporting the fibres there. Four ways to stop it, and why a low-angle blade and a very fine cut are not optional.

Short answer
Never plane straight off the far edge. Either work in from both edges towards the middle, or chamfer the far corner off first, or clamp a sacrificial block hard against the far edge so the fibres are supported. Use a low-angle block plane, a very sharp blade and the finest shaving the plane will take.
Planing end grain means severing fibres across their length rather than along it, which takes far more force and leaves them completely unsupported at the point where the blade exits. At that moment the last few fibres are a cantilever, and they break rather than cut. Every technique here is about making sure the blade never exits into thin air.

Step by step
- Sharpen first, properly.End grain is unforgiving of a blunt edge in a way long grain is not — a blade that still works on a face will simply crush end grain. Hone to a genuine edge before you start, and expect to re-hone during a long job.
- Use a low cutting angle.A block plane, bevel up on a low bed, presents a much lower cutting angle than a bench plane and slices end grain far more cleanly. A low-angle block plane is the right tool for this job.
- Set a very fine shaving.Finer than you would use on a face. End grain shavings should come off as a fine dust-like ribbon. A thick cut generates the force that splits the corner.
- Choose one of the four ways to protect the far corner.Plane in from each edge towards the middle, stopping short each time. Or chamfer the far corner off first so there is nothing left to break. Or clamp a sacrificial block hard against the far edge, so the blade runs off into the block. Or skew the plane so the cut runs off at an angle rather than square. Any one works; the block is the most reliable.
- Skew the plane as you cut.Holding the plane at an angle to the direction of travel lowers the effective cutting angle further and slices the fibres. It makes an obvious difference on end grain.
- Use a shooting board for accuracy.A shooting board holds the workpiece square while the plane runs on its side along a track. It is the traditional and still the best way to trim a mitre or an end square and true, and it makes end grain planing controlled rather than a balancing act.
- Wet the surface if it is fighting you.A wipe of methylated spirit or water on stubborn end grain softens the fibres slightly and reduces splitting. Let it flash off before any finish goes on.
- Check for square as you go.It is very easy to round the end over rather than plane it flat, because pressure shifts from the toe to the heel. Check with a square frequently and correct early.
Tips
- End grain takes finish very differently from face grain — it drinks stain and oil and goes much darker. Sand it a grit or two finer than the rest, or seal it first.
- A sharp block plane on end grain leaves a surface glassier than any abrasive can produce. It is one of the genuinely satisfying moments in hand tool work.
- If a piece is small enough to hold in one hand, it is too small to plane safely by hand. Clamp it, or use a shooting board.
- For a lot of end grain — trimming many mitres, for example — a disc sander or a mitre saw with a fine blade is faster, but neither gives the finish a plane does.
Common mistakes
- Planing straight through and off the far edge — The last fibres are unsupported and break away, taking a chunk of the corner with them. On a visible piece it cannot be repaired invisibly.
- Using a bench plane set for face work — The higher cutting angle and thicker shaving are both wrong for end grain, and the result is chatter and splitting.
- Trying to take material off quickly — End grain requires many very fine passes. Trying to hurry it is how corners break and how blades get damaged.

Why does my block plane chatter on end grain?
Almost always a blade that is not sharp enough, or a lever cap that is not tight enough to hold the blade against the cutting force. End grain loads a blade much harder than face grain does.
Can I sand end grain instead?
You can, and it is often the practical answer for a small job — but sanding rounds the arris and end grain clogs paper fast. For a joint face or anything that must be square, plane it.
Do I need a shooting board?
Not for occasional work, but it is a simple piece of shop-made kit that transforms end grain accuracy. If you cut mitres or fit small parts regularly, it is an hour well spent.
