How much weight will a picture hook actually hold?
Reading a hook's rating honestly, the two-hook rule, and why the hanging hardware on the back of the frame fails more often than the hook on the wall.

Short answer
Hardwall picture hooks are rated by their number of pins and hold that figure only in sound plaster on masonry, pulling straight down. Weigh the picture, use two hooks rather than one, and check the hanging hardware on the frame — cord, D-rings and the screws holding them are what usually give way first.
A picture hanging is a chain with more links than people count: the wall, the hook, the cord or wire, the fittings on the frame, and the screws holding those fittings into what is often 6mm of soft frame moulding. The stated rating on the hook packet describes one link, and it is rarely the one that fails.

Step by step
- Weigh the picture.Bathroom scales, holding it and then holding nothing, or simply put it on the scales. Glass and a solid frame are heavier than they look, and a mirror is heavier again.
- Read the hook's rating for what it assumes.Single, double and treble pin hardwall hooks carry increasing loads, and the figure assumes sound plaster over masonry, correctly driven pins, and a straight downward pull. Soft or blown plaster gives a fraction of it.
- Use two hooks rather than one on anything wide or heavy.It halves the load per hook, it stops the picture tilting, and it means a single fixing failing does not drop the picture. This is the single most useful habit in picture hanging.
- Check the wall type before choosing.Pin hooks belong in plaster over masonry. In plasterboard, use a cavity fixing. In lath and plaster, find a lath or the timber. On a chimney breast, check the plaster is sound and not blown.
- Inspect the hardware on the frame.D-rings, plates, eyes and the screws holding them. On mass-produced frames those screws are short and in thin softwood. Replace weak fittings with larger plates and longer screws before blaming the wall.
- Prefer D-rings on the frame sides to a single cord.Two D-rings hooked directly over two wall hooks distribute the load evenly and keep the picture level. Cord across the back concentrates the load and lets the picture tilt.
- Do not use picture cord for a heavy mirror.Cord stretches and abrades over years and gives no warning. Heavy items want wire or, better, a split batten or mirror plates screwed to the wall.
- Use mirror plates or a French cleat for real weight.Once you are past what a hook comfortably takes, the answer is a fixing that spreads load along the frame rather than a bigger hook.
- Check anything old that is already hanging.Cord perishes, plaster blows, and hooks corrode. A picture that has been up for twenty years is worth taking down and re-hanging rather than trusting.
Tips
- A mirror's weight is dominated by the glass, so thickness matters more than size. A thick bevelled mirror can be double what its dimensions suggest.
- If a hook is pulling a small cone of plaster off the wall, the plaster is blown rather than the hook being overloaded. Move to a sound area or use a fixing that reaches the masonry.
- When in doubt, hang low. The consequence of a failure is proportional to how far it falls and what is underneath.
Common mistakes
- Trusting the rating on the hook without checking the frame fittings — Two 15mm screws into the back of a 20mm softwood moulding are usually the weakest link in the whole chain, and the hook rating says nothing about them.
- Using one central hook on a wide picture — It concentrates all the load on one fixing and lets the frame tilt every time anything brushes it. Two hooks solve both at once.
