Why do my phone photos look worse than they used to?

A phone camera that was sharp two years ago and is hazy now usually has a scratched lens cover, trapped moisture or a worn stabiliser — three faults with three different signatures.

Short answer

Photograph a bright light source against a dark background. Fine radiating streaks mean the lens cover is scratched. A soft milky patch that clears as the phone warms up is condensation. Photos that are sharp on a tripod and smeared handheld mean the stabiliser has worn. Scratches and stabilisers are module replacements; moisture sometimes dries out.

Image quality does not degrade gradually in software. If your photos are genuinely worse than they were, something physical has changed in front of the sensor or in the mechanism behind it, and each of the three causes looks different in a test shot.

Step by step

  1. Rule out the two-second explanation first.Clean the lens covers properly with a dry microfibre cloth, both the main and the ultrawide. Skin oil builds up as a film rather than a smear and you will not see it by eye. Re-test before going further.
  2. Take the flare test shot.In a dark room, photograph a torch or a bare bulb near the edge of the frame. A clean cover gives one or two neat flare shapes. A scratched cover throws fine streaks radiating from the light, and a halo of haze around it.
  3. Understand why scratches show up late.A sapphire or glass cover accumulates hairline scratches from grit in pockets and on tables. Each one is invisible individually. Together they scatter light, which lifts the black level and kills contrast — visible first in backlit and night shots, months before you notice it in daylight.
  4. Check for condensation and trapped moisture.A soft milky area, worst in one corner, that improves after the phone has been in a warm dry room for a few hours is water vapour behind the cover. It gets in through a seal that has aged, or after a soaking, and it can leave mineral marks when it dries.
  5. Test the stabiliser.Rest the phone on a stack of books and take a photo in dim light. Then take the same shot handheld. If the supported shot is sharp and the handheld one is smeared, the optical stabiliser is not doing its job. A failing one often makes a faint rattle or buzz when you shake the phone gently near your ear.
  6. Check whether one lens is worse than the others.Shoot the same scene at 0.5x, 1x and the telephoto. Degradation confined to one focal length is that specific module. Degradation across all of them is more likely a setting, a screen protector overhanging a cover, or a case edge intruding.
  7. Look at the case and any protector.A case lip that has shifted, or a stick-on lens protector that has picked up its own scratches or lifted at an edge, produces exactly the haze people blame on the phone. Remove both and re-shoot before concluding anything.
  8. Decide what is worth fixing.Lens covers are usually part of the camera module or the rear glass assembly, so replacement is a real repair rather than a part swap. On an older phone the sensible options are living with it, using the least-damaged lens, or putting the repair money towards the replacement you were going to need anyway.

Tips

  • Backlit shots and night shots reveal a scratched cover long before daylight shots do. Test in those conditions, not on a bright afternoon.
  • A stick-on lens protector is a consumable. Replacing a scratched one is cheap; replacing a scratched phone lens cover is not.
  • Do not use a cloth that has been in the same pocket as the phone. It carries the grit that caused the problem.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming a software update ruined the camera — Processing does change between updates and occasionally for the worse, but it does not create radiating streaks around lights or a milky corner. Those are physical. Run the flare test before blaming the update.
  • Cleaning a scratched cover harder — Rubbing grit across glass adds scratches. If a gentle wipe with a clean dry microfibre does not fix it, more pressure makes it permanently worse.

Fine streaks radiating from every bright light

Cause: Hairline scratches across the lens cover scattering light — Fix: Replace a stick-on protector if fitted; otherwise it is a module or rear-glass repair, and worth costing against the phone's remaining value.

Milky patch in one corner that comes and goes

Cause: Moisture behind the lens cover — Fix: Leave the phone somewhere warm and dry for a day or two. If it returns, the seal has failed and it will keep happening.

Sharp when supported, smeared handheld

Cause: Optical stabilisation failing — Fix: Use a support or a faster shutter by adding light. Repair means replacing the camera module.

Everything low-contrast and slightly hazy in daylight too

Cause: Oil film on the cover, or a lens protector that has aged — Fix: Clean properly with a dry microfibre; remove any protector and compare.

Questions people ask

Can a sensor wear out?

Not in any way you will see in normal use. Sensors accumulate hot pixels over many years, which shows as isolated bright dots in long exposures, not as general softness. General softness is in front of the sensor.

Does a scratched lens cover affect video too?

More than stills, because video has no multi-frame processing to lean on. Streaky flare around headlights and streetlights is usually the first thing people notice.
