Short answer
Do not paint a surface in direct sun or one that is hot to the touch. Follow the sun round the building and work on the shaded elevations, start early, and check the tin's maximum application temperature. Heat causes lap marks, brush drag, blistering and a film that skins before it has bonded.
Everyone knows that cold and damp cause painting problems. Heat causes more, and they are less obvious because the paint looks like it is going well. The film sets from the surface downwards, so a hot surface skins over while the coat below is still full of water or solvent — which gives you blisters, poor adhesion and a finish that never properly levels.

- Check the surface temperature, not the air temperature.A south-facing render wall or a dark-painted door in July can be far hotter than the air. If you cannot hold your palm flat on it comfortably, it is too hot to paint. This is the check that matters, and almost nobody does it.
- Follow the shade round the building.Start on the east elevation early, work round as the sun moves, and finish on the west in the evening. Never paint a face in full sun, however convenient the timing is.
- Read the maximum as well as the minimum on the tin.Most products state a temperature range for application. The upper limit is real and is there because above it the paint sets too fast to flow out or to wet the substrate properly.
- Expect lap marks and plan the work around them.In heat the wet edge lasts a fraction of the usual time, so laps show badly. Work in smaller sections, keep the wet edge moving, and never stop halfway across an elevation — go to a corner, a downpipe or a natural break.
- Do not thin the paint to compensate.The instinct in heat is to add water so it brushes more easily. Use a proprietary conditioner or extender instead, which lengthens the open time without diluting the film. Water gives you a thin coat that is more likely to flash and chalk.
- Watch out for the evening dew as much as the midday sun.A hot day often ends with a rapid drop in temperature and heavy dew on cold surfaces. Paint applied late that has not properly formed a film will be ruined by dew, so stop early enough for the coat to set.
- Keep the materials cool.A tin standing in the sun is far hotter than the wall you are painting and will skin, thicken and set in the tray. Keep tins, trays and brushes in the shade, and keep a lid on anything you are not using.
Tips
- Dark colours on a sunny elevation can reach very high surface temperatures. If a house is being painted dark, that is an argument for working early and late rather than through the middle of the day.
- Masonry that has been in the sun holds heat for hours after it goes into shade. Give a wall time to cool rather than moving onto it the moment the shadow arrives.
- Water-based paints suffer more from heat than solvent-based ones, because the water evaporates so fast that the film cannot coalesce properly.
Common mistakes
- Painting a sunny elevation because the weather is finally dry — The film skins over a hot substrate, blisters and does not bond. A dry, mild, overcast day is better painting weather than a hot sunny one.
- Working out of a tin standing in the sun — The paint thickens and skins in the tray, drags on the brush and puts lumps into the finish.

Cause: Wet edge lost in the heat — Fix: There is no fix short of recoating the whole surface in cooler conditions. Work smaller sections and to natural breaks next time.
Small blisters appearing within hours of painting
Cause: Solvent or water trapped under a skinned surface on a hot substrate — Fix: Once fully dry, sand back the blistered areas, prime if you have exposed the substrate, and recoat when the surface is cool.
Brush drags and leaves ridges
Cause: The paint is setting before it can flow out — Fix: Move to a shaded surface, use a conditioner rather than water, and work in smaller areas.
