Why is my oak going black around the screws?

The tannin and iron reaction that blackens oak, cedar and chestnut round every steel fixing, how to stop it happening again, and the chemistry that removes the stain.

Short answer

Oak is full of tannic acid, and where iron and moisture meet it, they react and produce iron tannate — a blue-black stain that spreads into the timber. Ordinary steel and zinc-plated screws cause it; stainless steel does not. Remove the stain with oxalic acid, replace every ferrous fixing with stainless, and keep steel tools and wire wool off oak surfaces.

This surprises people because everything looks fine on the day and the black rings appear weeks later, spreading outwards from every screw head. It is not rot, it is not a fault in the timber, and it will happen every time on oak, sweet chestnut, western red cedar and a number of other tannin-rich timbers unless the fixings are changed.

Safety

Oxalic acid is a genuine irritant and is harmful if swallowed. Wear gloves and eye protection, mix and use it outdoors or with the window open, keep it away from children and pets, and rinse thoroughly afterwards. Do not mix it with bleach or with any other cleaning chemical.

Step by step

  1. Confirm what you are looking at.Blue-black staining radiating outwards from a screw, a nail, a bracket or a hinge, worse where the timber gets damp. If it follows the fixings, it is the iron reaction. If it is diffuse and unrelated to metalwork, it is more likely sapstain or mould.
  2. Replace every ferrous fixing with stainless steel.A2 stainless indoors and in normal outdoor use, A4 in coastal or very exposed conditions. Zinc plating does not solve it — the coating is thin, it is damaged when the screw is driven, and the steel underneath then reacts as usual.
  3. Check for the other iron in the assembly.Brackets, hinges, washers, nail plates, a steel post shoe, staples from a nail gun, even swarf left in a groove from drilling. All of it will stain. Anywhere ferrous metal touches oak in the presence of moisture, the reaction runs.
  4. Buy oxalic acid crystals to remove the stain.Sold as wood bleach or as a rust and stain remover. It reduces the black iron tannate to a soluble colourless compound. It works far better than anything else on this specific stain and it does not lighten the surrounding timber the way a two-part wood bleach does.
  5. Mix and apply it to the whole surface, not just the stain.Follow the strength on the packet, warm water dissolves it faster. Apply generously with a brush or a cloth to the entire face, not just the marks, or you will end up with pale patches where the acid worked. Let it dwell until the black lifts, which may be minutes.
  6. Rinse thoroughly and neutralise.Rinse with clean water repeatedly. Any residual acid left in the timber interferes with finishes later. Some people follow with a weak alkaline rinse — a little bicarbonate of soda in water — then a final water rinse. Let the piece dry completely.
  7. Re-sand lightly and refinish.The wetting will have raised the grain. Once fully dry, sand lightly with a fine grit and reapply the finish. Expect the treated area to look slightly different in colour until the oak weathers back.
  8. Keep steel away from oak in future.No wire wool on oak — the fragments left in the grain each become a black speck. Wipe down the bench before working oak, and be careful with steel clamps and steel rules resting on damp oak surfaces.

Tips

  • The same reaction is used deliberately: dissolving wire wool in vinegar and brushing the result onto oak is the traditional way to ebonise it. That is the best possible demonstration of how reliably this happens.
  • Green oak and freshly wetted oak react fastest, because the moisture is what carries the reaction. Dry oak indoors with dry stainless fixings will not stain at all.
  • If you must use a coated fixing rather than stainless, use one specifically rated for oak or for treated timber — the manufacturers state it. Ordinary yellow-passivated screws are not adequate.

Common mistakes

  • Sanding the stain out — The stain penetrates several millimetres into the timber. Sanding removes the surface and reveals more of it, and on a thin component you run out of material before you run out of stain. Chemistry is the answer, not abrasion.
  • Using bleach — Household chlorine bleach does very little to iron tannate and can damage the timber and any finish. Two-part wood bleach lightens the timber itself as well as the stain, leaving a pale patch. Oxalic acid targets this specific stain.
  • Replacing only the visible screws — The hidden ones stain just as enthusiastically, and the marks appear later from inside the joint. Change all of them while the piece is apart.

Questions people ask

Which other timbers do this?

Any tannin-rich timber: sweet chestnut and western red cedar strongly, and to a lesser degree walnut, mahogany and some other hardwoods. Cedar in particular streaks badly from steel fixings and from run-off from ungalvanised metalwork above it.

Will the stain come back?

Only if there is still iron in contact with the timber. Remove every ferrous fixing and the treated area stays clean. If black returns round a fixing you thought was stainless, it was not.

What about black streaks running down from a bracket or a gutter?

That is the same reaction driven by iron dissolved in rainwater running over the timber. Fix the source — replace or coat the ferrous metalwork above — before you clean the timber, or it will simply restain.
