Short answer
It is possible in both directions using the platforms' own migration tools, and only during the new phone's initial setup. Going to iPhone, use Apple's Move to iOS app; going to Android, use the manufacturer's switch tool with the supplied cable. Both phones need to be charged, connected by cable, and the new phone must be at the setup stage — not already in use. The cloud backups are not interchangeable between platforms and never will be.

What exists instead is a supported hand-off built into the first-run migration flow, which reads the history off the old phone directly and writes it in the new phone's format. - Check both phones meet the requirements before you start.The transfer needs recent operating system versions on both phones and a recent WhatsApp version on the old one. Update both, and update WhatsApp, before you begin. An out-of-date app on the old phone is the most common reason the option never appears.
- Get the right cable.Android to iPhone and iPhone to Android both use a wired connection for the WhatsApp portion. You need a cable that physically connects the two — the one in the new phone's box is usually correct, with an adapter if the ports differ. Wireless migration moves other things but not WhatsApp history.
- Take a normal WhatsApp backup on the old phone anyway.It will not be readable on the other platform, but if the transfer fails and you decide to stay put, you want a current backup on the old phone. It costs five minutes.
- Start the new phone from a factory state.If it has already been set up, back out and erase it: on iPhone through the reset option in general settings, on Android through the factory-reset option. Everything on it is lost, which is why this must be done before you put anything on it.

- Check what did not come across.Message history and media generally survive. Call history, some sticker packs, and payment-related items typically do not. Check a group chat, a chat with a lot of images, and your starred messages before you consider the move done.
Alternatives
- Export individual chats: WhatsApp can email a single chat as a text file, optionally with media attached. Tedious for many chats, but it works on any platform at any time and produces something readable forever. The right choice for two or three conversations that genuinely matter.
- Start fresh and keep the old phone: Verify WhatsApp on the new phone and keep the old handset on wi-fi as a read-only archive of the old history. Unglamorous, free, and completely reliable — the old app is signed out but the on-device history and its media remain visible.
- Screenshot or print what matters: For a handful of irreplaceable conversations, screenshots into your photo library survive every future migration and every platform change. Not elegant; permanently readable.
- Third-party transfer software: Widely advertised, generally paid, and requires connecting both phones to a computer and granting it access to your messages. Results are inconsistent and the privacy trade is real. Only worth considering when the official route is already impossible.

Not a supported one. You either erase the new phone and redo the setup with the migration, or you accept a fresh WhatsApp and keep the old phone as an archive. Wiping a phone you have already loaded with photos and apps is a big ask, which is why this is worth getting right on day one.
Does it move all my groups?
Group membership is server-side and comes back on verification regardless. The transfer is about the message history inside them.
Will my chats be on both phones afterwards?
The old phone keeps its local copy but is signed out of the account, so it becomes a static archive. The new phone becomes the live account. Only one phone can be signed in to a WhatsApp account on a given number.
Does this work for other messaging apps?
