How do I make a packing list I can reuse every trip?

Short answer

Build one core list of things you take on every trip, then short add-on lists per trip type — beach, cold, driving, flying, with children. Copy the core plus the relevant add-ons each time. Review it once when you get home and add whatever you missed.

Packing lists fail because people write a new one each trip from memory, which is exactly the faculty that let them down last time. The fix is to write it once, structured so it can be recombined, and then to improve it only from evidence.

Step by step

  1. Write the core list from what you took last time, not from imagination.Everything you use on every trip regardless of destination: documents, medication, chargers, toothbrush, underwear, a day bag. If it goes on every trip, it belongs here.
  2. Group the core list by where things live, not by category.Bathroom, bedside, charging drawer, hallway. You pack by walking round the house, so a list ordered that way needs one circuit instead of five.
  3. Make short add-on lists per trip type.Beach, cold weather, hiking, city, driving, flying, camping, with children. Each is only the extra items — five or ten lines, not a whole list again.
  4. Put the leaving-the-house items at the bottom.Bins out, heating set, water off, keys to the neighbour, meter readings. These are not packing but they are the things forgotten in the rush, and they belong on the same sheet.
  5. Keep it somewhere you will actually open it.A note on your phone that syncs, or a checklist app that lets you copy a template and tick items off. Paper works if it lives with the suitcase.
  6. Copy the template rather than editing it.Tick off a copy each trip so the master stays clean. Editing the master into a specific trip is how the reusable list stops being reusable.
  7. Review it once when you get home. Two questions: what did I wish I had brought, and what came back unused. Add the first, delete the second. Three trips of that and the list is genuinely good.

Tips

  • Note quantities on the core list — three t-shirts, not 't-shirts'. It is the difference between a list and a reminder.
  • Keep a permanently packed wash bag with duplicates of the everyday toiletries. It removes the most tedious part of packing entirely.
  • Add a line for the return journey: anything bought, chargers left in sockets, the hotel safe. Things left behind are almost always in one of those three places.

Questions people ask

Should the list be by category or by room?

By room, or more precisely by where things live in the house. You pack by walking around, so a list in that order means one circuit rather than repeatedly crossing the house.
