How long before a freshly painted room is safe to sleep in?

VOC stands for volatile organic compound: the part of the paint that evaporates as it dries. Water-based paints have far less than solvent-based ones, but 'low VOC' is a labelled band rather than a promise of no emissions, and the fastest and most reliable control on any of it is moving air through the room.

1. Read the VOC band on the tin.UK and EU paint labels carry a VOC content band, from minimal through low to high. It is a measure of how much solvent evaporates as the coating dries. Water-based emulsions and modern acrylic trim paints sit at the low end; traditional oil-based gloss, varnish, solvent stain blocks and shellac sit high.
2. Ventilate properly rather than opening one window a crack.Cross-ventilation is what clears vapour: two openings on different sides of the room so air actually moves through, not one open window in still air. A fan in a doorway blowing outwards moves far more air than an open window alone.
3. Treat water-based emulsion as a same-day return in normal cases.Ventilate through the day, and by evening a normally painted, well-aired room is usually fine for a healthy adult. Give it longer if the smell persists, if the room is small or internal, or if you painted several coats.
4. Treat solvent-based products completely differently.Oil-based gloss, varnish, solvent stain blocks, wood stains and strippers keep releasing solvent for days as they cure, not just while they look wet. Keep the room ventilated and unoccupied at night until there is no detectable solvent smell.
5. Be more cautious for children, pregnancy, asthma and pets.For a nursery or a bedroom for anyone with a respiratory condition, use a minimal-VOC water-based product, ventilate for several days, and do not put the room back into use while any smell remains. Birds are extremely sensitive to fumes and should be moved out of the house entirely.
6. Do not mask the smell.Air fresheners, bowls of vinegar and onions do not remove solvent from the air; they change what you can smell, which removes the only warning you have. Air the room instead.
7. Store and dispose of the leftovers properly.Lids on tight, away from living space and heat, and never in a bedroom. Solvent-based leftovers and solvent-soaked cloths need proper disposal, and oil-soaked rags need laying out flat or immersing in water because they can self-heat.

Tips

• Cold, still weather is the worst case: the room dries slowly, you have the windows shut, and the vapour has nowhere to go. Paint solvent products in mild weather when you can open up.
• The smell of a water-based emulsion is mostly ammonia and coalescing solvent. It fades quickly with airflow and is not the same hazard as a solvent gloss.
• If you have to sleep in a freshly painted house, sleep in a different room with the door shut and the painted room's windows open.

Common mistakes

• Closing the windows overnight because the paint is drying — Drying does not need still air, and the vapour concentrates in a sealed room. Ventilation makes paint dry faster, not slower, in almost all conditions.
• Treating 'low VOC' as 'no fumes' — It is a labelled band. A low-VOC product in a small unventilated room still builds a noticeable concentration, and the smell is your signal to open up.
