What is different about laying large format tiles?
Substrate flatness, bed thickness, offset, handling and cutting all change with tile size, and the tolerance for error shrinks as the tile grows.

Short answer
Everything gets less forgiving. The substrate has to be genuinely flat because a big tile cannot follow a curve, the adhesive bed must be full with back-buttering, the offset should be about a third rather than a half, levelling clips become close to essential, and the cutting needs a rail cutter or a wet saw rather than a hand cutter.
A 600mm or 1200mm tile is not just a bigger version of a 200mm one. The larger the tile, the less it can bend to follow the wall, the more any deviation shows at the joint, and the greater the leverage of any void underneath. Most large format problems are the same problems as small format problems, magnified until they matter.

Step by step
- Check the substrate flatness with a straight edge before anything else.Lay a long straight edge across the wall or floor in several directions and look for light under it. Large tiles need a much flatter base than small ones, and this is the stage where the job is won or lost.
- Correct the substrate, do not bury the problem in adhesive.Levelling compound on a floor, filling or floating on a wall. A thick soft adhesive bed under a big tile shrinks unevenly and gives you lippage anyway.
- Check the tiles themselves for bow.Stand two tiles face to face and look for a gap in the middle. Most large tiles have some bow; knowing which way it runs lets you lay them consistently.
- Use about a third offset, or none at all.A half offset puts the crown of a bowed tile against the end of the next. A third offset, or a straight stack, keeps the difference at the joint much smaller.
- Comb the adhesive and back-butter every tile.Full coverage is not negotiable at this size — the leverage over a void is enormous. Comb the substrate in one direction, skim the back of the tile, then press and slide to collapse the ribs.
- Place with two people and suction cups.Trying to place a large tile alone means it goes down at an angle, catches, and gets adjusted by dragging — which pushes adhesive into ridges and leaves voids.
- Use levelling clips on every joint.They clamp adjacent faces flush while the adhesive sets, which is genuinely difficult to do by hand at this size. Remove them the way the maker specifies, usually by knocking sideways along the joint.
- Check with the straight edge every few tiles.Not at the end. Lippage is adjustable while the adhesive is soft and permanent afterwards.
- Cut with a rail cutter or a wet saw.A hand cutter cannot exert an even score over 1200mm. Long cuts need a proper rail cutter with a long bar, or a wet saw, and awkward cuts need a wet saw with a diamond blade.
- Allow generous curing time before loading the floor.A big tile on a fresh bed is easy to move by walking on it. The adhesive data sheet gives the times, and they are longer in cool or damp conditions.
Tips
- Large tiles mean fewer joints, which means a floor is easier to clean but also that every joint carries more visual weight — accuracy shows.
- Storage matters: stand big tiles on edge on a soft surface, never flat in a stack where the middle is unsupported.
- Plan how a tile will physically get into the room. A 1200mm slab does not turn some corners.
- For very large formats, consider whether a professional is the better answer. The material cost of a room's worth of large porcelain often exceeds the labour cost of laying it.
Common mistakes
- Using dabs or partial coverage under a large tile — The bigger the tile, the longer the unsupported span over any void, and the more leverage a footstep applies to it. Large tiles on partial beds crack, and they crack in the middle where the void is.
- Laying big tiles on a wall or floor that was never checked for flatness — A small tile can follow a gentle curve joint by joint. A 1200mm tile is a rigid plane; over an undulating surface every joint becomes a visible step, and no amount of clips or technique will hide it.
- Using a half offset out of habit — It is the standard look for brick-sized tiles and the worst choice for long large-format ones, because it aligns the crown of one tile's bow with the end of the next.
If it doesn't work
Every joint has a visible step
Cause: Substrate not flat, or offset too large for the tile's bow — Fix: Nothing to be done on what is laid. For the remainder, reduce the offset and level the substrate; if the substrate is the cause, it needs correcting before continuing.
Tile cracked after a few weeks with no obvious impact
Cause: Void beneath and repeated loading — Fix: Replace with full coverage and back-buttering, and check neighbouring tiles by tapping.
Tile slid down the wall while setting
Cause: Weight exceeding the adhesive's grab — Fix: Use an adhesive with a high initial grab rated for large formats and support the tile with battens or spacers until set. On tall walls, work upwards from a batten.
Questions people ask
How flat does the substrate need to be?
Flatter than for small tiles, and the tolerance is normally quoted as a maximum deviation under a straight edge of a given length. The adhesive and tile manufacturers state theirs; the practical version is that any hollow or hump you can see light under with a long straight edge will show at the joints.
Do I need special adhesive?
You need one rated for the tile size and the substrate — usually a flexible, high-grab, non-slip formulation, and often a large-format or 'no slip' variant. The data sheet is explicit about tile size limits, and it is worth reading before buying.
Can I cut large porcelain with a hand cutter?
Only short cuts on thinner tiles. A long cut needs a continuous even score, which a short-bar cutter cannot deliver over that distance, and the snap then wanders. A long rail cutter or a wet saw is the realistic answer.
