How do I stop a garden room or shed office overheating?
A lightweight building with a large glazed front, a thin roof and no thermal mass behaves like a parked car. The four things that actually bring one down, in the order that pays.

Short answer
Shade the glass and the roof from outside, ventilate high and low so hot air can leave rather than circulate, add insulation if the build is thin, and only then consider a cooling unit. A garden room has almost no thermal mass, so it heats within an hour of the sun reaching it and cools just as quickly once you flush it.
Garden rooms and converted sheds are sold on the summer photograph and bought for year-round use, and the summer is usually the season they fail. The construction is the reason: a thin, light, well-sealed box with a big south-facing window and a dark roof, standing in full sun with no surrounding building to shade it. Everything that helps is about intercepting the sun before it arrives and giving the hot air somewhere to go.

- Shade the roof first if it is dark.A dark felt, rubber or metal roof on a lightweight building is the largest single gain, and it is directly above your head with little between. Anything that keeps the sun off it — a shade sail above, a pale reflective coating suitable for the covering, or a planted pergola — pays back immediately.
- Shade the glazing externally.The full-height glazed front that makes these buildings attractive is a solar collector. External blinds, an awning, a deep overhang or a parasol positioned to shade the glass rather than the doorway all work. Internal blinds help with glare but far less with heat.
- Create high and low ventilation.Most garden rooms have one door and perhaps one window, both at the same height, which cannot vent a hot layer at ceiling level. Adding a high-level opening — a small vent, a top-hung window, or a louvre near the ridge — plus a low inlet lets the building empty itself by stack effect whenever it is cooler outside.
- Check what insulation you actually have.Cheaper garden rooms have thin or no insulation in the roof, which is the surface that matters most in summer and the one people insulate last. Adding insulation to the roof and keeping a ventilation path where the construction requires one improves both seasons. On a summerhouse or converted shed this may mean building an insulated inner lining.
- Flush it before you start work, not when it is already hot.Because there is no thermal mass, a garden room that is opened at eight in the morning starts the day at outdoor temperature. One opened at eleven has already banked several hours of gain that then has to be removed.
- Move the heat-producing kit.A desktop computer, monitors and a printer in a two-by-three-metre sealed room contribute a surprising amount. In a house you would not notice; here it is a measurable share of the problem. Laptops over desktops, and turn things off between sessions.
- Consider a proper cooling unit only after the rest.A wall-mounted air-to-air heat pump sized for the room is the effective answer for a garden office used all year, and it heats in winter too. It needs a competent installer and an adequate electrical supply, and it is wasted money in an unshaded, uninsulated box.
- Do not store anything heat-sensitive in there.A garden room reaching high temperatures every sunny day is a poor home for paint, adhesives, aerosols, lithium batteries, candles, vinyl records, photographs or anything else on the heat-sensitive list. Keep those elsewhere.
Tips
- Positioning matters more than anything you can retrofit. A garden room shaded by a tree from mid-morning onwards is a different building from one in open sun.
- A light-coloured roof covering, where the material allows it, makes a real difference to a lightweight building — far more than it would on a masonry house.
- Trickle vents or a small louvre at high level cost very little and can be fitted when the building goes up, which is much easier than retrofitting.
- If the building is used as an office, remember that it is a workplace for you — working through a day at high temperature is a productivity and health issue, not a matter of toughing it out.
- A garden room used year-round justifies proper insulation. One used for storage does not, but then it should not be storing anything the heat will damage.

- Adding only a floor-level fan or vent — Hot air sits at the top of the room. Without a high-level opening it has nowhere to go and the fan simply stirs it.
- Fitting internal blinds to the glazed front and stopping there — The heat is already inside by then. On a lightweight building with almost no mass, external shading is disproportionately more effective.
- Running an extension lead from the house for a cooling unit — A permanent supply to an outbuilding is a notifiable electrical job in England and Wales for good reason. A long extension lead feeding a compressor load is a fire risk, not a shortcut.
- Using it to store paint, aerosols or tool batteries — It routinely exceeds the temperatures those products are specified for, which spoils paint, raises pressure in aerosols and permanently degrades lithium cells.

Cause: East or south-facing glazing in full sun with no external shading — Fix: Shade the glass externally and open up before the sun reaches the building rather than after.
Hot even on a cloudy warm day
Cause: Thin or absent roof insulation, plus no high-level ventilation — Fix: Add a high-level opening so the hot layer can leave, then price insulating the roof properly.
Cools down outside but the room stays hot
Cause: Single opening at one height, so no stack draught can form — Fix: Open something low and something high at the same time, or put a fan in the high opening blowing out.

Why does it get hotter than the garden outside?
