What IP rating do I need for outdoor electrics?
How to read the two digits of an IP rating, the ratings that matter for a British garden, and why the rating on the box is only half the protection.

Short answer
The first digit is protection against solids, the second against water. For a sheltered outdoor light, IPX4 is the practical minimum. For anything exposed, ground-level or hosed, IP65 or IP66. For anything that might be submerged, IP67 or IP68. The rating only holds if the fitting is installed the right way up with its gaskets intact.
IP stands for Ingress Protection, and the two digits are independent tests. The number people quote is usually the water digit, which is the one that matters in a British garden — but the rating is a laboratory result under a specific test, and a fitting installed with its cable entry pointing upwards will fail regardless of what the box says.
Step by step
- Read the first digit as solids.0 is no protection, 4 excludes objects over 1mm, 5 is dust protected, 6 is dust tight. For outdoor use, 5 or 6 matters mainly because insects and dust in a fitting cause failures that look like water damage.
- Read the second digit as water.1 and 2 are dripping. 3 is spraying at up to 60 degrees. 4 is splashing from any direction. 5 is low-pressure jets. 6 is powerful jets. 7 is temporary immersion. 8 is continuous immersion. An X in either position means not rated or not tested for that.
- Match the rating to the actual position.Sheltered porch light: IPX4 is adequate. Exposed wall light or a garden spike light in a border: IP65. Ground-recessed light in a driveway or a path where water pools: IP67. Pond and pool equipment: IP68 and specialist requirements beyond the rating.
- Understand what IP44 really means.IP44 is splash-rated. It handles rain landing on it. It does not handle a hosepipe, a pressure washer, standing water, or a fitting mounted where water runs down a wall into it. It is the minimum for garden use, not a general answer.
- Check the mounting orientation.Most outdoor fittings are rated in a specific orientation, usually with the cable entry at the bottom. Mounting one upside down, or on a soffit when it is designed for a wall, invalidates the rating and turns the fitting into a cup.
- Respect the gaskets.The rating depends entirely on the seals. A gasket left out, twisted, pinched or perished, or a lens overtightened and cracked, and the fitting is unrated. Gaskets are also consumable — a ten-year-old outdoor light has probably lost its seal.
- Check the cable gland.The gland where the cable enters must be tightened onto the cable's outer sheath and sized to it. A gland loose around a thin cable is an open hole. A cable entering from above with no drip loop feeds water straight in regardless of the gland.
- Remember the rating says nothing about the electrical protection.IP is about water and dust. Outdoors also requires 30mA RCD protection, correct cable type for the route, and certified installation. A perfectly rated fitting on an unprotected circuit is still not compliant.
Tips
- If you can, choose fittings with replaceable gaskets and accessible fixings. Sealed-for-life outdoor fittings are disposable when the seal fails.
- Stainless and marine-grade fittings are worth it on coastal properties — salt destroys the fixings long before the electronics fail.
- Avoid mounting anything outdoors where roof runoff or a leaking gutter hits it. No IP rating survives being hosed continuously for years.
Common mistakes
- Treating IP44 as "waterproof" — It is splash-resistant. Jets, immersion and standing water are all outside its test conditions, and a pressure washer will get inside an IP44 fitting easily.
- Assuming a higher first digit means better water protection — The digits are independent. IP54 and IP65 both offer good water resistance at different levels, and IPX7 offers excellent water protection with no solids rating at all.
- Mounting a wall fitting on a ceiling or soffit — The seals and drainage paths are designed for one orientation. Turned over, the fitting collects water instead of shedding it.
If it doesn't work
Condensation inside an outdoor fitting
Cause: Failed seal, or normal air exchange in a fitting with no breather — Fix: The fitting has lost its rating. Have it replaced, and check the mounting orientation and gland while it is off.
Fitting works but the lamp corrodes quickly
Cause: Moisture inside at a level below what causes a trip — Fix: Same answer — the seal has failed. Corroded lamp contacts also cause heat and arcing.
Pressure washing tripped the electrics
Cause: Water forced past a splash-rated seal — Fix: Do not direct jets at fittings. Have any affected fitting checked before use, as water inside a live fitting is a shock risk.
Questions people ask
What IP rating do I need for a shed?
Inside a dry shed, ordinary IP20 accessories are usually acceptable, though damp and dusty sheds do better with IP44 or above. The supply to the shed and anything on the outside of it needs proper outdoor rating and certified installation.
Is an IP-rated fitting safe to install myself?
The rating is a product property; the installation is still notifiable outdoor work in England and Wales, so no. The rating does not change who may install it.
What about IP ratings in bathrooms?
The same scale is used, and bathroom zones specify a minimum — generally IPX4 in Zones 1 and 2, higher in Zone 0. Bathroom electrical work is notifiable and requires an electrician.
