What is an interceptor trap, and why does my old drain keep blocking there?

Short answer
In many houses built before roughly 1920 the last chamber before the sewer contains an interceptor trap — a U bend holding a water seal to keep sewer gas and rats out of the house drain. Beside it is a rodding arm closed by a clay stopper. The trap is where old drains block, the missing stopper is why sewage bypasses the seal, and the open arm is how rats get in.
If your drains block in the same place every couple of years, or there is a smell around a chamber near the boundary, or you have rats and nobody can find the route, this component is the first thing to look for — and a great many people who have lifted that cover have looked straight at it without knowing what it was.

Step by step
- Work out whether you are likely to have one.They were standard practice in urban Victorian and Edwardian drainage and were fitted well into the twentieth century in places. The chamber that has one is usually the last on the property, nearest the boundary or the road.
- Lift the cover and look at the outlet end.In an ordinary chamber the channel runs straight through and out. In an interceptor chamber the channel arrives, and at the far end it drops into a U shape built into the chamber wall rather than continuing level. - Find the rodding arm.A short branch rising at an angle from just before the trap, back into the chamber, ending in a socket. It exists so that the drain beyond the trap can be rodded, because rods cannot pass through a U bend.
- Look for the stopper.The socket should be closed by a plug — traditionally a clay one on a chain. It is missing in a large proportion of surviving chambers, because the chain corroded and the stopper fell into the drain, and because previous blockages were cleared by removing it.
- Understand what the trap is doing.The water seal stops sewer gas coming up from the public sewer into the house drain, and it stops rats moving from the sewer into the property's drainage. That was the point of it, and it is still doing that job where it is intact.
- Understand why it blocks.A U bend in a foul drain catches wipes, fat, roots and grit. It is the narrowest, most tortuous point in the run and it is at the far end, so everything from the house arrives there. Blockages at an interceptor build up from the house side, so the chamber fills.
- Know why house-side rodding fails there.Rodding from an upstream chamber will reach the trap and stop, because rods cannot turn through it. Clearing an interceptor means clearing the trap itself from the chamber, or rodding the far side through the rodding arm.
- Decide what to do about a damaged one.A cracked or bypassed interceptor removes a barrier that was doing a job. Options range from fitting a proper stopper, to a modern rat flap or non-return valve, to removing the trap and replacing the chamber base. Which is appropriate depends on the drain, the sewer and the local water company's position, so this is a drainage contractor's call.
Tips
- If a drainage contractor removes the stopper to clear a blockage, ask them to put a new one back. Leaving it out is convenient for the next clearance and is why so many are missing.
- A recurring blockage at the same point every year or two is a strong signal for a CCTV survey rather than another rodding. The survey finds the reason; rodding only postpones it.
- Rats in a house with no obvious route are a classic interceptor symptom. Pest controllers who work in Victorian housing look at the drains early for exactly this reason.
Common mistakes
- Breaking out the interceptor to stop the blockages — It does stop that particular blockage point and it removes the seal and the rat barrier. It is sometimes the right answer, but it is a decision with consequences and it should be taken deliberately with advice, not with a lump hammer.
- Leaving the rodding arm open after a clearance — Sewage entering the chamber can then bypass the trap and pond in the chamber, and rats have an open route up into it. It is the single most common defect in these chambers.
- Assuming a full chamber means your blockage — If the chamber nearest the boundary is full and the ones upstream are not, the problem may be past your boundary and therefore the water company's. Establish where the transition is before paying anyone.

Cause: A blockage at or beyond the interceptor — Fix: If it is at the trap it is yours; if it is beyond, it is likely the lateral drain or public sewer and is the water company's, who will attend without charge. Ring them before commissioning anyone.
A persistent drain smell around a chamber
Cause: A dry, cracked or bypassed interceptor letting sewer gas through, or a missing stopper — Fix: Look at the trap and the rodding arm. A trap that has dried out because nothing runs through it can simply be refilled by running water; a cracked one cannot.
Rats indoors with no visible entry point
Cause: A damaged drain or a defective interceptor giving access from the sewer — Fix: A CCTV drain survey is the standard investigation. Blocking holes at ground level does nothing if the route is underground.
Questions people ask
Are interceptors still installed?
No. Modern drainage relies on trapped appliances and ventilated stacks rather than a single interceptor, and the maintenance problems they cause are why they fell out of use.
Should I remove mine?
Not as a first response. Where one is sound and stoppered it is doing a job. Where it is repeatedly blocking or is damaged, removal is one legitimate option among several and it needs advice, because it changes how the drain behaves and what protects it.
What is a back-drop chamber?
A chamber where the incoming drain arrives much higher than the outgoing one, with a vertical drop pipe connecting them. It is used on sloping ground, and like an interceptor it is a point rods cannot pass, so it changes how a blockage is cleared.
Who owns the drain past the chamber?
In England and Wales most drains serving more than one property, and the lateral drain beyond the boundary, transferred to the water companies in 2011. Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own arrangements. It is worth establishing before you pay for anything.
