How do I fix an integrated appliance door that drags or has come loose?

The two fixing systems used to hang a cabinet door on a dishwasher, fridge or washing machine, and how to reset one so the door lines up with the rest of the kitchen.

Short answer

Integrated appliances hang their door either on a sliding bracket screwed to the appliance side, or on a fixed bracket with a spring-loaded hinge on the appliance door. Both have slotted adjustment. Take the load off, slacken the brackets, set the door with 2mm packers against its neighbours, then tighten — and check the appliance itself is level first.

An integrated appliance door is a kitchen door hung on a machine, and it inherits problems from both. It can be misaligned because the door fixings have slipped, or because the appliance underneath it has shifted on its feet, and those are two different repairs. Level the machine first, always.

Step by step

  1. Check the appliance is level and stable before touching the door.Open the appliance door and put a level across the top of the machine, front to back and side to side. A dishwasher that has settled onto one foot will throw its cabinet door out and no amount of adjustment at the door will fix it.
  2. Identify the fixing system.Two common types. Sliding: a metal bracket screwed to the side of the appliance, with the door screwed to it, and it takes the door's weight. Fixed: brackets on the appliance door itself, with a template supplied for positioning. Look before dismantling.
  3. Take the weight off before slackening anything.Support the door with a hand or a prop. A heavy door with both brackets slack will drop and either damage the door edge or bend a bracket.
  4. Slacken, do not remove.The brackets have slotted holes precisely so the door can be nudged and re-tightened. Slacken enough to move the door with a firm push and no more.
  5. Set the gaps with packers.2mm packers or coins into the gaps against the neighbouring doors, hold the door there, and tighten. Set it against its neighbours, not against the appliance behind it.
  6. Check the door does not foul the plinth or the floor when it opens.Integrated appliance doors swing down or out and can catch a plinth or a floor covering that has been changed since fitting. If it does, the door needs to sit slightly higher, which means adjusting the appliance feet rather than the door.
  7. Check the spring or counterbalance on a dishwasher door.A dishwasher door with a cabinet door on it is counterbalanced by a spring and cable at each side, tensioned for that door's weight. A door that drops open or fights you has a spring out of adjustment, a broken cable, or a door heavier than the spring was set for.
  8. Deal with a fridge or freezer door separately.Integrated fridges usually use a sliding bracket system that lets the cabinet door move relative to the appliance door as it opens. If a fridge door has begun to bind or the seal is not closing, check that the sliders are free and greased before adjusting anything else.
  9. Retest with the appliance running.Vibration during a cycle is what loosens these fixings in the first place. Run a cycle and check the door again afterwards.

Tips

  • Heavy door fronts — thick timber, or a tall integrated fridge door — are the usual reason a counterbalance spring cannot cope. Appliance makers publish a maximum door weight, and it is worth checking before ordering a solid oak front.
  • If the appliance is on a floor covering laid after the kitchen, it may now sit higher than it did. That changes everything about the door alignment and is not the door's fault.
  • Photograph the bracket positions before slackening them. Getting back to where you started is worth having as an option.

If it doesn't work

Dishwasher door drops open under its own weight

Cause: Counterbalance spring out of adjustment or a cable has broken — Fix: Most dishwashers have an adjustable spring tension at the base of each side. If a cable has snapped, it is a spare part job — and the door is unsafe to leave in use because it falls without warning.

Cabinet door sits low and scrapes the plinth

Cause: The appliance has settled on its feet, or the floor covering has changed — Fix: Level the appliance on its feet first, then reset the door with packers.

Door is out of line with its neighbours but the appliance is level

Cause: Bracket fixings have slipped under vibration — Fix: Support the door, slacken the brackets, reset with packers, tighten firmly. Recheck after a full cycle.

Integrated fridge door binds as it opens

Cause: Sliding brackets are dry or fouled — Fix: Clean and lightly grease the sliders. Check nothing in the cabinet is fouling the door's travel.
