How do I work out which circuit a socket is on?
A methodical hour that produces a labelled board and a map of what is on which circuit, which turns every future fault from guesswork into a two-minute check.

Short answer
Plug a radio or a lamp into the socket, then switch MCBs off one at a time at the consumer unit until it goes off. Write the room on the board label as you go. Doing the whole house at once takes about an hour and saves that many times over the first time something trips.
Most UK houses have far fewer circuits than people expect — commonly one ring for downstairs sockets, one for upstairs, one lighting circuit per floor, and dedicated circuits for the cooker, the shower and any outbuilding. Discovering that layout once, while everything works, is one of the highest-value hours of household admin there is.

Step by step
- Warn the household and shut things down properly.Save work on computers, note that Wi-Fi and the boiler will go off and on, and check nothing critical is mid-cycle. If anyone in the house relies on powered medical equipment, do not do this without planning around it.
- Photograph the board as found.Existing labels, however wrong, are evidence. Photograph the whole board and each label before you change anything.
- Sketch a rough plan of the house.A page per floor with every socket, light and fixed appliance marked. You will fill in circuit numbers as you go and this becomes the map.
- Start with the obvious dedicated circuits.Cooker, electric shower, immersion heater, EV chargepoint and any garage or shed supply are usually on their own MCBs and are usually labelled correctly. Confirm each by switching it off and checking the appliance.
- Do the lighting circuits next.Switch every light in the house on, then turn one lighting MCB off. Walk round and note which lights died. Repeat for each lighting MCB. Lighting is usually split by floor, but not always, and the exceptions are the useful discovery.
- Do the socket circuits with a radio.A radio turned up loud is better than a lamp because you can hear it from another room. Plug it into a socket, have someone switch MCBs off in turn, and record which one silences it. Move to the next socket.
- Do not assume rooms map neatly onto circuits.Kitchens frequently have a separate ring. A bedroom socket is sometimes on the downstairs ring because of how the cable happened to run. Extensions and conservatories are often spurred off whatever was nearest. The point of the exercise is precisely to find these.
- Check the outdoor and awkward items.Outside lights, the doorbell transformer, the loft light, the garage, the boiler and the burglar alarm all need finding. The boiler is often on a fused spur off a lighting or socket circuit and this is worth knowing before a plumber asks.
- Label the board clearly and permanently.Write what the circuit actually serves, not just "sockets". "Kitchen sockets and boiler" is a far more useful label than "ring 1". Photograph the finished board and keep it somewhere you can find it in the dark.
Tips
- Do this before you need it, not during a fault. Trying to map a board by torchlight while half the house is off is miserable and error-prone.
- Note which sockets do not go off with any MCB — that usually means you missed one, but occasionally it means a spur fed from somewhere unexpected, which is worth mentioning at the next EICR.
- Keep the map with the house paperwork. It is genuinely useful information to hand on when you sell.
Common mistakes
- Testing sockets by feel rather than with something plugged in — A socket with the switch off, or a socket on a circuit you have not identified, gives no signal either way. Something that visibly or audibly runs is the only reliable indicator.
- Relying on a non-contact voltage pen to confirm a circuit is dead — A voltage pen is a screening tool. It gives false positives from adjacent cables and, more dangerously, false negatives. It never proves a circuit dead — only an approved two-pole voltage indicator used prove-test-prove does that, and that is an electrician's tool for an electrician's task.
If it doesn't work
A socket stays live whichever MCB you switch off
Cause: You have missed a circuit, or the socket is fed from a different board or a spur from an unexpected circuit — Fix: Recheck systematically with the main switch off to confirm it does die, then work through the MCBs again.
Lights on two floors go off with one MCB
Cause: The lighting is on one circuit, which is common in smaller houses and flats — Fix: Nothing wrong with it. Label it accurately so a future fault is not misdiagnosed.
The boiler goes off with the upstairs lights
Cause: It is fed from a fused connection unit on the lighting circuit, which is a common arrangement — Fix: Label it. Tell any heating engineer, because it changes how they isolate.
Questions people ask
Is there a gadget that does this without switching things off?
Circuit tracers exist: a transmitter plugs into the socket and a receiver identifies the cable at the board. They work well in the hands of someone who knows their limitations, and they are what electricians use to avoid blacking out a working building. For a house, switching MCBs is free and definitive.
Should I write on the consumer unit itself?
Use the label strip provided, or printed labels. Do not open the unit to label the inside, and do not stick anything over the test buttons or ratings.
What if the board has no spare labelling space?
A printed sheet in a plastic wallet taped inside the cupboard door beside the board is what most electricians do. Number the ways on the board and refer to the numbers on the sheet.
