What do I do if my handbrake is stuck or frozen on?

Why handbrakes freeze on overnight in cold or wet weather, the safe ways to free one, and how to park so it does not happen again.

Short answer

A handbrake that will not release after a cold night is usually a frozen cable or a rear shoe stuck to a rusty drum, not a broken part. Warmth and gentle rocking free most of them: start the engine and let it run, then with the handbrake off try a very small forward-and-back movement to break the bond. If it will not free after a few gentle attempts, stop — forcing it can tear a friction lining off.

Two different things get called a stuck handbrake. One is the cable itself freezing, where water sitting in the outer sleeve turns to ice and locks the inner cable so the lever comes down but nothing releases. The other is the rear brake sticking to the drum or disc, where a car parked wet in cold weather forms a light rust bond overnight between the friction material and the metal. Both are much more common on cars that sit outside, and both are almost entirely preventable by how you park.

Safety

Never crawl under a car supported only by a jack, and never leave a car parked on a slope in neutral with the handbrake released. If you free a frozen handbrake, test the brakes at walking pace before joining a road, and if the car still drags or pulls, stop and have it recovered.

Step by step

  1. Work out whether the lever moves.If the lever or the electronic switch releases normally but the car will not move, the brake is stuck at the wheel. If the lever itself is solid and will not move, the cable or the mechanism is frozen. They need different approaches.
  2. Warm the car up first.Start the engine and let it run for ten or fifteen minutes with the heater on. Underbonnet and exhaust heat plus rising air temperature frees a great many frozen cables without anything else being done. This is the least damaging thing you can try.
  3. Try a very gentle rock, with the handbrake off.In a manual, with the handbrake released, ease the clutch to move the car a few centimetres forward, then reverse the same amount. In an automatic, use drive and reverse briefly. You are trying to break a light rust bond, not to drag the car — if it does not free in two or three attempts, stop.
  4. If a rear brake is bonded, a firm but controlled tug sometimes releases it with an audible crack.That noise is the bond breaking and is normal. What is not acceptable is spinning the wheels or repeatedly revving against a locked wheel, which can pull the friction lining clean off a shoe and leave you with a much bigger repair.
  5. Do not use boiling water, and be careful with any heat source.Boiling water on a frozen mechanism refreezes almost immediately and often worse, and it strips protective grease and coatings. Warm — not boiling — water on a frozen cable is a last resort, and it needs the car driving afterwards so everything dries.
  6. Test the brakes properly before you drive off.Once free, roll forward at walking pace and brake. If the car pulls, drags, or one wheel feels hot to the back of your hand after a short drive, a caliper or shoe is still binding and that needs a garage.
  7. Change how you park so it stops happening.In freezing weather, park a manual in gear on the flat with the handbrake off rather than on. That removes the failure mode entirely. Do not do this on a slope, and do not do it if there is any chance someone else will get in and start it without checking the gear.

Common mistakes

  • Revving hard against a locked wheel — The bond usually gives eventually, but often by tearing the friction lining off the shoe. That turns a free fix into a rear brake rebuild.
  • Leaving a manual out of gear with the handbrake off on any kind of slope — The whole point of the technique is that it removes the brake from the equation, which means nothing at all is holding the car unless the gear is.

If it doesn't work

Electronic parking brake will not release and shows a fault

Cause: Low battery voltage, or a motor that has failed on the caliper — Fix: Charge or jump the battery first — many electronic parking brakes refuse to operate below a voltage threshold. If it still will not release, it is a garage job, and most cars have no usable manual override.

Brake releases but the car feels heavy and one wheel gets hot

Cause: The shoe or caliper is still partly bound — Fix: Drive gently to a garage or have it recovered. A binding rear brake destroys itself and can set fire to grease and dust in extreme cases.

Handbrake works but needs almost all its travel

Cause: Cable stretch or worn rear friction material — Fix: Get it adjusted. It is an MOT item and a stretched cable is also more likely to hold water and freeze.

Happens repeatedly through the winter on the same car

Cause: Corroded cable sleeve holding water, or a car that only does short trips so the brakes never dry out — Fix: Have the cable inspected and lubricated at the next service, and take a longer drive occasionally so the rear brakes get warm enough to dry off.

Questions people ask

Is it bad to leave the handbrake off overnight?

On flat ground, in a manual left in gear, it is a normal and widely used cold-weather practice. It is not appropriate on a slope, in an automatic without park engaged, or anywhere the car could be moved by someone who does not know.

Why does this only happen to my car and not my neighbour's?

Cars that sit outside, do short journeys and have older cables are far more prone, because the rear brakes never get hot enough to dry out and the cable sleeves have lost their seal. Garaged cars and high-mileage cars rarely see it.

My electronic parking brake has no lever. Is there anything I can do?

Very little beyond checking battery voltage, which is the most common cause of a refusal to release. Some cars have an emergency release procedure in the handbook; many do not. It is one of the genuine trade-offs of the electronic system.
