What is a tenon saw for, and how is it different from a panel saw?

The five hand saws worth knowing, what tooth count and set actually control, and why a saw that cuts beautifully in one job is useless in another.

Short answer

A panel saw is a long unstiffened saw with coarse teeth for cutting boards and sheet to rough length. A tenon saw is short, has a heavy brass or steel back to keep it rigid, and has fine teeth with very little set, so it cuts a narrow accurate kerf for joints. Length and tooth count are the two things that separate every hand saw from every other.

Hand saws look interchangeable and are not. Three variables decide what a saw can do: how long the blade is, how many teeth per inch it has, and how far those teeth are bent sideways. A joiner's saw and a builder's saw sit at opposite ends of all three, which is why a tenon saw makes hard work of a fence rail and a panel saw makes a mess of a tenon.

Saw tooth set, and why the kerf is wider than the blade

Step by step

  1. Learn the panel saw โ€” the general one.Around 500โ€“550mm of unstiffened blade, roughly 7โ€“10 teeth per inch, plenty of set. It cuts boards, sheet material and construction timber to rough length quickly. The long unbacked blade means it can cut deeper than the blade is wide, which a backed saw cannot.
  2. Learn the tenon saw โ€” the accurate one.Around 250โ€“350mm, with a folded brass or steel back along the top edge that stops the thin plate flexing. Fine teeth, minimal set, narrow kerf. It cuts joints, mitres in a mitre box, and anything where the line matters more than the speed. The back limits how deep it can cut.
  3. Learn the coping saw โ€” the curved one.A thin removable blade held in tension in a sprung steel frame. It cuts curves, scribes internal mouldings and removes waste from between saw cuts. The blade can be released and threaded through a drilled hole to start a cut in the middle of a board.
  4. Learn the hacksaw โ€” the metal one.A tensioned hardened blade in a rigid frame, typically 18 to 32 teeth per inch. It cuts metal, threaded rod, plastic pipe and anything else a wood saw would blunt itself on instantly. Blades are consumable and cost very little.
  5. Learn the pad or jab saw โ€” the awkward-access one.A stiff pointed blade in a handle with no frame, so it can be stabbed straight into plasterboard and worked around a socket cut-out. Rough, but it goes where nothing else fits.
  6. Understand what tooth count controls.More teeth per inch means a finer, slower cut with less tear-out; fewer means a fast, rough one. The working rule is at least three teeth in the cut at all times โ€” a coarse saw on thin material catches and judders because only one tooth is engaged.
  7. Understand what the set controls.The teeth are bent alternately left and right so the slot they cut, the kerf, is wider than the blade. That clearance is what stops the saw gripping. A lot of set gives a free-running rough cut; very little gives a fine accurate one that binds more easily.
  8. Note the pull saw as a modern alternative.Japanese-pattern saws cut on the pull stroke, which puts the thin blade in tension rather than compression. That allows a much thinner plate, a narrower kerf and a very fine finish, and it changes the technique โ€” you pull, you do not push, and you never force it.

Tips

  • Hardpoint saws have induction-hardened teeth that stay sharp far longer than traditional steel but cannot be resharpened. They are consumables, and they are the right choice for construction work.
  • The number stamped near the handle is usually teeth per inch (TPI) or points per inch (PPI), and the two differ by one. It rarely matters in practice โ€” treat a higher number as finer.
  • A tenon saw and a mitre box together will cut architrave, skirting returns and small mouldings more accurately than a badly set-up mitre saw.

Common mistakes

  • Using a coarse panel saw on thin sheet or moulding โ€” With fewer than three teeth in the cut the saw snatches, jumps out of the line and splinters the face.
  • Cutting deep with a tenon saw โ€” The back stops the blade at a fixed depth, and forcing it bends the plate permanently.
  • Cutting anything containing metal with a wood saw โ€” One hit on a hidden nail or a screw takes the edge off several teeth instantly and it cannot be undone on a hardpoint saw.

Questions people ask

How many hand saws do I actually need?

Two cover almost everything: a hardpoint panel saw for breaking things down and a tenon saw for anything where the line matters. Add a hacksaw the first time you meet metal and a coping saw the first time you meet a curve or a scribed moulding.

Is a rip saw different from a crosscut saw?

Yes. Rip teeth have square, unbevelled faces and chisel the fibres apart along the grain. Crosscut teeth are bevelled to points and knife the fibres before lifting them, which is what keeps a cut across the grain clean. Most modern general-purpose saws are ground as a compromise that does both adequately.

Can I still buy a saw that can be sharpened?

Yes, but they are a specialist purchase now. Traditional saws with soft-steel teeth can be filed and set; hardpoint saws cannot, because the hardened teeth destroy a file.
