What types of glass are in a house, and how do I tell them apart?

Short answer

Ordinary float glass breaks into long sharp shards. Toughened glass is heat treated so it shatters into small blunt fragments, and it carries an etched mark in a corner. Laminated glass has a plastic interlayer that holds the pieces together, and its edge shows a line. Wired glass holds together but is not a safety glass by modern standards. Doors, side panels, low windows, bathrooms and balustrades all require safety glass.

Most people only think about this when something breaks, which is the worst moment to learn that the pane in a door is not the same product as the pane in an upstairs window. The identification is genuinely easy once you know where to look, and the regulation behind it is one of the more consequential ones in an ordinary house.

Safety

Broken glass in a door, a low window, a screen or a balustrade is a safety matter, not a cosmetic one. Those positions are required to have safety glass, and replacing a broken pane in one with ordinary glass is dangerous and non-compliant. Never attempt to cut, drill or edge toughened glass — it shatters completely. Board the opening and get a glazier.

Step by step

  1. Look for the mark in a corner first.Toughened glass carries a small permanent etched or sandblasted stamp, usually in one corner, giving the manufacturer and the standard. It is easy to miss on a dirty window and it is the definitive evidence.
  2. Look at the edge for a laminate line.Where an edge is visible, laminated glass shows as two panes with a very thin interlayer between them. On a windscreen the same construction is obvious; in a house it is most often in a door, an overhead glazed panel or a security glazing position.
  3. Understand what float glass is.Ordinary annealed glass, made by floating molten glass on molten tin, which is why it is flat and clear. It is the base product for everything else. On its own it breaks into long, pointed, dangerous pieces.
  4. Understand what toughening does.The glass is heated and rapidly cooled so the surfaces are in compression and the core in tension. It becomes several times stronger, and when it does break the stored energy shatters the whole pane into small blunt granules at once.
  5. Understand what lamination does.A plastic interlayer bonds two or more panes. When it breaks the glass cracks but stays attached to the interlayer, so the opening stays closed. That is why it is used overhead, in security glazing, and where a fall through the glass would be the hazard.
  6. Recognise wired glass for what it is.Georgian wired glass has a mesh cast into it and was used for fire resistance and to hold the pane together. It is not a safety glass in the modern sense: it breaks into shards held by wire, and the wire itself cuts. It is common in older doors and outbuildings.
  7. Learn the critical locations.The building regulations guidance identifies positions where glazing must be safety glass or otherwise protected: in and beside doors up to a defined height, and in windows below a defined height from the floor. It is a legal requirement for replacement work, not just for new build.
  8. Use a polarised test if you need one more check.Viewed through polarised sunglasses at an angle, toughened glass often shows faint dark spots or stripes from the toughening process. It is a useful confirmation when there is no visible mark, though it is not conclusive.

Tips

  • Photograph the corner stamp on any pane before it is replaced. A glazier can then match the specification exactly rather than guessing.
  • If a pane has shattered into thousands of small pieces, it was toughened. That tells you what to replace it with.
  • Toughened glass occasionally breaks spontaneously, from nickel sulphide inclusions in the glass. It is rare, it is a known phenomenon, and it is not something anyone did.

Common mistakes

  • Replacing a broken door pane with ordinary float glass — It is unsafe and it does not comply. A door pane is a critical location precisely because people walk into doors, and float glass in one has caused serious injuries.
  • Trying to cut or drill toughened glass — The whole pane is in a balanced state of stress. Any cut or hole releases it and the pane disintegrates instantly. Toughened glass is cut and drilled before toughening, never after.
  • Applying safety film and treating that as equivalent — Applied film has a role in retaining fragments, but it is not the same as a safety glass to the relevant standard, and it does not make a non-compliant critical location compliant.

If it doesn't work

Cause: It was toughened glass, and it has done exactly what toughened glass does — Fix: Clear it up carefully — the granules travel a long way — and replace like for like with toughened. Look for the corner stamp on any remaining pane in the same frame to confirm the specification.

Cause: Most likely laminated glass doing its job — Fix: It is still holding the opening but its strength is gone. Have it replaced promptly; do not treat the fact that it has not fallen out as a reason to leave it.

You cannot find a mark on a pane in a door

Cause: Either it is not safety glass, or the mark is dirty, painted over or in an unexpected corner — Fix: Clean all four corners and look again in raking light. If there is genuinely no mark on glazing in a critical location, treat it as ordinary glass and have it assessed.

Questions people ask

Is double glazing automatically safety glass?

No. A sealed unit is two panes of whatever specification was ordered. Either, both or neither pane may be toughened or laminated, and the mark tells you which.

Which is better, toughened or laminated?

They fail differently and suit different jobs. Toughened is stronger and fails safe by granulating; laminated is better where the opening must stay closed or where something might fall through. Overhead glazing normally calls for laminated for that reason.

Do I have to upgrade existing glass?

There is generally no requirement to upgrade glazing that is simply old. The requirement bites when glazing is replaced, at which point the replacement has to meet the current standard for that position.

What about glass in a shower screen or a balustrade?

Both are safety-critical positions and both require appropriate safety glass — toughened or laminated to the relevant standard. A balustrade also has structural requirements for the loads it must resist, which is a design matter.
