How do I get more heat from the same radiators?

Short answer
Bleed them, balance them, check nothing is blocking the airflow, and check the boiler flow temperature. All four are free and together they make a noticeable difference before any money is spent.
Radiators frequently underperform for reasons that cost nothing to fix. Working through them in order usually explains why one room is cold, and often improves the whole house.
Step by step
- Feel every radiator, top and bottom.Cold at the top means air — bleed it. Cold at the bottom means sludge. Cold all over while others are hot means it needs balancing. Two minutes tells you what you are dealing with.
- Bleed the ones that are cold at the top.Heating off, radiator key, turn slowly until water comes out. Then check and top up the boiler pressure, which drops as a result.
- Balance the system.The most commonly skipped free improvement. Radiators nearest the boiler take most of the flow; throttling their lockshield valves pushes hot water to the far ones. If the far end of the house is always cold, this is usually why.
- Clear the space around them.Nothing against the front, no long curtains over them, no shelf immediately above, no sofa blocking them. Radiators work by convection and anything in the way stops it.
- Check the boiler flow temperature.Often set high by default. For a condensing boiler, lowering the flow temperature to around 60°C makes it condense properly and run more efficiently, though rooms take longer to warm.
- Fit thermostatic valves if you do not have them.They let you heat the rooms you use and turn down the ones you do not. Not expensive, and a bigger saving than most measures.
- Consider a power flush for sludge.Cold at the bottom across several radiators means iron oxide sludge. A power flush or a chemical clean by an engineer restores output, and a magnetic filter prevents it returning.
- Add reflectors on uninsulated external walls.Modest but real where the wall behind is cold and uninsulated. Cheap enough to be worth it in that specific case.
Tips
- Balancing takes an afternoon, costs nothing and is the single most under-used heating improvement in British homes.
- Do all of this in early autumn, before you need the heating. Discovering a sludged system in January means waiting for an engineer.
- If radiators need bleeding repeatedly, air is getting in from somewhere. That is worth investigating rather than bleeding monthly.
