Up and over, roller or sectional — which garage door do I have?
Four mechanisms, each defined by how the leaf moves and what space it needs. How to tell yours apart, what each is good and bad at, and why the type is the first thing a supplier asks.

Short answer
Up and over means one rigid panel: a canopy type swings out and leaves a third of itself projecting, while a retractable type runs fully back inside on tracks. A roller door is made of slats that curl onto a barrel above the opening and needs no space at all in front or on the ceiling. A sectional door is hinged full-width panels running up a curved track to sit against the ceiling, and it seals best.
The type decides everything practical about a garage door — whether you can park close to it, whether you can store things on the ceiling, whether it can be insulated, and which spare parts fit. It is also the first question anyone selling a part or a repair will ask, and a surprising number of people cannot answer it.

- Watch what the leaf does as it opens.This is the whole identification. One rigid panel that swings outwards before rising is an up and over. Slats curling upward are a roller. Several full-width panels folding at their joints are a sectional.
- Separate canopy from retractable.Both are one rigid panel. A canopy type ends up horizontal with roughly a third of its length projecting outside the opening, and its tracks are short. A retractable type travels fully into the garage on long horizontal tracks and projects nothing.
- Understand what a canopy door costs you outside.It swings out before it goes up, so it needs clear space in front. A car parked close to the door stops it opening at all, and that is the most common practical complaint about them.
- Understand what a retractable door costs you inside.The tracks run the depth of the garage at ceiling level, so the ceiling is no longer available for storage and anything hanging there is in the way.
- Understand where a roller door wins.It goes straight up onto a barrel above the opening, so it needs no space in front and none on the ceiling. That makes it the usual answer for a short drive or a garage where the ceiling is being used, and it is also the easiest to automate.
- Understand where a sectional door wins.Hinged panels running on a curved track give no forward swing, full use of the opening width, and much the best seal all round. It is the type to have if the garage is insulated, heated or used as a workshop.
- Find the springs before touching anything.Look for a shaft with a spring wound around it above the opening, or long springs down each side connected to cables. Knowing where they are is the point at which you know what not to touch.
- Note the make and model before ordering anything.There is usually a plate or a sticker on the inside of the leaf or the frame. Springs, cables, rollers and locks are all model-specific and a photograph of that plate saves a great deal of time.
Tips
- Lubricating the tracks, rollers and pivots — not the springs — is the whole of the useful owner maintenance on most doors, and it prevents a good share of the failures.
- If a door can be lifted halfway and left, and stays put, the balance is right. If it drops or flies up from that position, the spring balance has changed and that is a signal rather than a nuisance.
- Automating an existing door is usually possible, and the door must be correctly balanced first. An opener that is compensating for a failing spring will burn out and hide the real fault.
Common mistakes
- Adjusting or replacing a spring — The energy stored in a garage door spring is what makes the door liftable by hand, and it is released violently by an incorrect method. This is the definitive job to pay for.
- Fitting an opener to a door with a failing spring — The motor takes the load the spring should be carrying, so it strains, overheats and eventually fails, and the door is unsafe in the meantime.
- Oiling the springs — It does not help and it hides corrosion and cracks that are the warning signs of failure. Lubricate the moving contact points, not the spring.
If it doesn't work
The door has suddenly become very heavy
Cause: A broken spring, or a snapped or slipped cable — Fix: Stop. Do not keep operating it manually or with an opener. A door with a failed spring can come down fast, and this is the specific failure that injures people.
The door binds and scrapes on one side
Cause: A distorted frame, worn rollers, or a track that has moved — Fix: Check the track fixings and the rollers before adjusting anything. A frame that has moved usually means the fixings into the masonry, which is a different repair.
Rain and leaves blow in under the door
Cause: A worn bottom seal, or a floor that is not level across the opening — Fix: Replacement bottom seals are widely available and are a genuinely straightforward job. Where the floor is uneven, a brush seal or a threshold strip works better than a rubber one.
Questions people ask
Can any type be insulated?
Sectional doors are made insulated as standard from most manufacturers, and insulated roller doors exist. A single-skin up and over panel can be improved, but the perimeter seal is usually the bigger loss and it is what the sectional type does better.
Which is most secure?

Do I need permission to change a garage door?
Replacing like for like on a house is usually permitted development, though the rules are set separately in each UK nation, and conservation areas, article 4 directions in England, listed buildings and flats all change it. Widening the opening is a structural alteration and a different question.
