Which flooring can I use in a bathroom?

The bathroom question is not what looks good, it is what happens at the joints when water gets there. What each material actually does when wet, and the edge detail that matters more than the material.

Short answer

Sheet vinyl, LVT and tile are all genuinely suitable. Laminate is not, because its core swells irreversibly at the joints. Engineered wood is possible with care but is water-resistant rather than waterproof. Whichever you choose, the perimeter and the junction with the bath, shower and WC is what actually keeps water out.

Bathroom floors do not fail in the middle. They fail at the edges, at the WC pan, at the shower tray and at the door threshold, where water finds a joint and goes underneath. That is why the material matters less than most people think and the detailing matters much more.

Safety

A wet bathroom floor is slippery and bathrooms are where a large share of domestic falls happen. Choose a surface with meaningful slip resistance when wet, not just when dry — polished stone and high-gloss tile are the worst offenders. The other hazard is invisible: a floor that lets water through at the joints soaks the deck below and rots it for years before anything shows.

Step by step

  1. Start with what the room actually gets.A cloakroom with a basin is a very different room from a family bathroom with a shower over the bath and small children. Match the ambition of the waterproofing to the water.
  2. Check the subfloor first.In an upstairs bathroom this is usually chipboard, and it is usually the thing that fails. Look for swelling at the joints, softness near the bath and any evidence of an old leak, and put it right before laying anything.
  3. Deal with the substrate for tile properly.Tile on a timber floor needs a stiff deck, and usually a backer board or a decoupling membrane. Tile laid straight onto flexing chipboard cracks, and cracked grout in a bathroom is a water path.
  4. Consider slip resistance explicitly.Tiles are classified for slip resistance and the classification for barefoot wet areas is different from the general one. Ask the supplier for it rather than judging by feel in a dry showroom.
  5. Plan the edges before the material.How does the floor meet the bath, the shower tray, the WC pan, the pedestal and the door? Every one of those is a joint that needs sealing, and sheet vinyl coved up the wall handles it better than anything else.
  6. Seal the perimeter with a flexible sealant.Not grout, not filler. A sanitary-grade flexible sealant at every junction between floor and wall, floor and bath, and floor and tray, because these joints move and rigid materials crack.
  7. Think about access.Bath wastes, shower traps and WC connections all need to be reachable one day. A floor that has to be destroyed to reach a trap is a floor you will destroy. Plan an access panel.
  8. Check underfloor heating compatibility if you have it.All of these can go over UFH with the right specification, but the thermal resistance limit applies and the commissioning sequence matters. Vinyl and LVT in particular have a maximum surface temperature.

Alternatives

  • Sheet vinyl: The most genuinely waterproof domestic option, because a small bathroom often needs no seam at all and the sheet can be coved up the wall. Cheap, warm and soft underfoot. Best choice for a shower room or a family bathroom on a budget.
  • LVT: Waterproof material, convincing appearance, warm and quiet. Glue-down is the better bathroom specification because the joints are bonded; click LVT has mechanical joints that water can reach. Needs a well-prepared subfloor.
  • Ceramic or porcelain tile: The most durable and completely unaffected by water, but the grout is not waterproof and the substrate underneath needs proper attention. Cold underfoot without underfloor heating, and slip resistance varies enormously between products.
  • Engineered wood: Possible in a bathroom with good ventilation and careful detailing, and it looks better than anything else here. It is water-resistant, not waterproof, and standing water at a joint will still damage it. Not for a shower room.
  • Laminate: Not recommended. The fibreboard core swells permanently when water reaches a joint, and bathrooms guarantee that it will. Water-resistant laminates exist and are better, but they are still the wrong tool for the room.

Is water-resistant laminate good enough for a bathroom?

It is genuinely better than standard laminate and some products carry a real warranty for wet areas. It is still a wood-fibre core with mechanical joints, and in a room where water will sit on the floor, LVT or vinyl is the lower-risk choice for the same money.

Can I put a wooden floor in a bathroom?

Engineered wood, in a well-ventilated bathroom without a shower over the bath, with the perimeter properly sealed and spills wiped up, works and looks excellent. Solid wood moves too much with the humidity swings.

What is the warmest bathroom floor?

Cushioned sheet vinyl is the warmest underfoot without heating. With underfloor heating, tile becomes the warmest because it conducts the heat best — which is the opposite of its unheated behaviour.
