Why does my flat-pack wardrobe wobble, and can I still fix it?
The five causes of a wobbling flat-pack unit in diagnostic order, how to tell them apart in two minutes, and which ones can still be cured once the thing is built.

Short answer
Work through it in this order: racking because the back panel is missing, loose or pinned in only four places; cam locks left at a quarter turn; a carcass assembled out of square; feet or plinth not bearing evenly on an uneven floor; and finally a design that was never rigid. Anchor it to the wall first — that alone cures most of the movement and removes the tip-over risk while you diagnose the rest.
A flat-pack carcass is four rigid boards joined at four pivoting corners, and a shape like that has no resistance to leaning sideways at all. Everything that stops it — the back panel, the cams pulled fully home, the squareness of the build — is doing structural work that looks cosmetic. That is why the wobble almost always traces back to the step someone skipped because it seemed fiddly.

Step by step
- Anchor it to the wall before diagnosing anything.Strap or bracket from the solid top rail or the side of the carcass into a stud or masonry. This is not a later refinement — it removes the failure mode that actually hurts people, and it stops the carcass leaning while you work on the rest.
- Push the top corner sideways and watch what moves.If the rectangle leans into a parallelogram while every joint stays closed, that is racking and the back panel is the answer. If a joint visibly opens and closes as you push, that joint is the problem. If the whole unit rocks as a rigid box, it is the feet or the floor.
- Check the back panel first, because it is the commonest cause.Look behind. A missing back is a wardrobe with no bracing at all. A back pinned with six pins is only slightly better, because the thin hardboard flexes between fixings. It wants pins or short screws every 100 to 150mm all the way round the perimeter and into any mid rail.
- Re-tighten every cam lock a half turn.Go round the whole carcass with a screwdriver. Cams left at a quarter turn leave a millimetre of slack per joint, and a wardrobe has twenty of them. The arrow moulded on the cam face should end up pointing at the bolt. Stop at the stop — forcing past it strips the chipboard.
- Measure both diagonals of the back opening.Corner to corner, both ways. Equal means square. More than about 5mm apart means the carcass was built or fitted out of square, and it will never stop moving until it is pushed back true and the back re-fixed.
- Push it square and re-fix the back.Slacken the back fixings, ease the top corner across until the diagonals match, then re-pin the back all round while it is held there. This is the repair that turns a permanently leaning wardrobe back into a rigid box.
- Level the feet on the floor, not on the wardrobe.A tall unit magnifies a floor error enormously — 3mm of rock at the base is 20mm of sway at the top. Adjustable feet get wound; fixed plinths get rigid packers, not folded cardboard, which compresses over a few months and puts the wobble back.
- Check the doors last, and only after the carcass is true.Uneven door gaps are a symptom of an out-of-square carcass, not a hinge problem. Adjusting hinges to hide a lean means the doors will drift again as the carcass keeps moving.
- Add a stiffener where the design has none.Some wide, cheap units simply have too few fixings. A length of timber screwed across the back inside the top, or a metal L-plate at two top corners, adds the triangle the design lacks.
- Load it low and re-check the anchor.Heavy things at the bottom, light things on the top shelf. Then push the top corner again. If it still moves after all of this, the anchor is what is holding it, and it needs to be into something structural.
Tips
- A wardrobe that arrived rigid and became wobbly after being moved has almost certainly had its back panel racked out of square in the move. Re-square and re-pin rather than tightening everything.
- Panel pins are supplied because they are cheap, not because they are best. 15mm screws through the back into the carcass edges hold far better and let you re-square later without destroying the board.
- If you are building one from new, stand the carcass upright and check the diagonals before the back goes on. Two minutes there saves the whole job.
Common mistakes
- Treating the back panel as cosmetic and leaving it off — It is the only diagonal bracing the design has. Without it the carcass has literally no resistance to racking, whatever else you tighten.
- Fitting or re-fitting the back while the carcass is out of square — It locks the lean in permanently. The back becomes a rigid template holding the wrong shape.
- Packing the feet with folded cardboard or a beer mat — It compresses under 100kg over a few months and the wobble comes back. Use rigid plastic shims or a hardwood offcut.
- Anchoring into the back panel because the screw goes in easily — Thin hardboard tears out under exactly the load an anchor exists to resist. The anchor must reach the solid top rail or side panel.
If it doesn't work
The unit leans sideways and the doors bind at one corner
Cause: Carcass out of square, back panel holding it there — Fix: Slacken the back, measure diagonals, push square, re-fix the back at close centres. Adjust hinges only after that.
It creaks and moves but no joint opens
Cause: Racking — back panel missing, loose, or fixed at too few points — Fix: Fix the back all round at 100 to 150mm centres, into the mid rail too if there is one.
A joint opens and closes as the unit is pushed
Cause: Cam under-tightened, or the cam has stripped its hole — Fix: Half turn on the cam. If it spins with no resistance, it has chewed out the board — see the cam lock guide for the repair.
It rocks on one corner like a wobbly table
Cause: Uneven floor or a foot not bearing — Fix: Rigid packers under the low foot, or wind the adjustable feet. Level it front to back as well as side to side.
Questions people ask
Is a wobbly wardrobe actually dangerous?
Yes, and specifically to children. A loaded double wardrobe is 80 to 120kg, it tips faster than an adult can react, and a child pulling on a shelf or climbing the drawers provides all the force needed. Anchor it to the wall — that single step removes the danger regardless of how much the carcass moves.
Can I fix the wobble without dismantling the whole thing?
Usually. Re-tightening the cams, re-fixing the back at close centres and packing the feet can all be done in place. Only a badly out-of-square carcass needs the back taken off, and even then the carcass stays standing.
Would gluing the joints have prevented this?
