Why did my wall plug disappear into the wall?
A plug that vanishes means the drill has broken into a void — a cavity, a dry lining gap, a perforated brick or a hollow block. How to work out which, and what to do next.

Short answer
You have drilled through the material into a space behind it. Stop drilling deeper, work out what the void is by probing with a wire and measuring, then change fixing type: a longer plug that reaches the material behind, a cavity fixing that folds out in the void, or resin with a sleeve. Do not just push a bigger plug in and hope.
The moment the plug goes in and keeps going is the moment the wall stops being what you assumed it was. There are four common voids in UK walls and they need four different answers, so the useful next step is not a bigger fixing but two minutes of investigation.

Step by step
- Stop and do not drill any further.You are now drilling into an unknown space that may contain insulation, cables, pipes, a cavity tray or the outer leaf. Depth control from here matters more than anything else.
- Measure how far in the void started.Push a wire in until it stops or breaks through, and mark it. Then compare with what you drilled. The depth at which the resistance ended tells you most of what you need.
- Void starting at about 10 to 15mm: it is plasterboard.Either a stud wall or dry lining. Feel for a stud, and use a cavity fixing or fix into the stud. An ordinary plug will never hold in it.
- Void starting at 10 to 15mm with a hard surface 20 to 40mm behind: it is dot and dab.Plasterboard dabbed onto blockwork. The answer is a long plug that passes through the board and the dab gap and into the block behind, which has its own established method.
- Void starting after the first 20 to 30mm of solid brick, and recurring: it is a perforated brick.The bit passes through webs and voids alternately. Resin with a perforated sleeve, or a purpose-made hollow fixing.
- Void starting after a full leaf of masonry: it is a wall cavity.On an external wall the inner leaf is typically around 100mm. Breaking through it means you have entered the cavity, and drilling further risks the insulation, a cavity tray or the outer leaf. Never fix by bridging a cavity — that is a route for water.
- Choose the fixing for what you found.Board only: cavity fixing or a stud. Board over block: long plug into the block. Perforated brick or hollow block: resin with a sleeve, or a hollow-substrate fixing. Cavity reached: shorten the fixing so it stays entirely within the inner leaf.
- Retrieve or abandon the lost plug.A plug that has fallen into a cavity is gone and is harmless. One that has pushed into a plasterboard void is also gone. Do not enlarge the hole trying to recover either.
Tips
- Setting a depth stop on the drill — a collar, or a wrap of tape on the bit — before you start is what prevents this on an external wall.
- If cold air comes out of the hole on an external wall, you are into the cavity. That is also a small clue that the wall has no cavity insulation.
- A fixing that bridges a cavity can carry water from the outer leaf to the inner one. It is not just a strength problem — it is a damp problem.
Common mistakes
- Pushing a longer plug in until it feels tight — It is gripping the edge of the hole in a thin skin of material. It will feel fine and let go the first time it is loaded.
- Drilling deeper to find something solid — On an external wall you are heading for the outer leaf, past the insulation and any cavity tray. On an internal wall you are heading for whatever services run in the void.
