Short answer
Test whether other devices stream fine at the same time. If only one device buffers, it is that device's wifi connection. If everything buffers, it is your broadband or the service — and evening congestion is a common cause.
Buffering means video is arriving more slowly than it plays. That can happen at the device, on your home network, on your broadband line, or at the service itself, and each has a different fix.
What you'll need
- Your streaming device
- Ethernet cable (optional)
- Another device to test with (optional)
Step by step
- Test another device at the same time.If a phone streams fine while the TV buffers, the problem is the TV's connection rather than your broadband.
- Restart the streaming device and the app.Fully off, not standby. Streaming devices and smart TVs accumulate problems over weeks of uptime.
- Move closer to the router or use ethernet.Smart TVs frequently have poor wifi and sit behind furniture. A cable to the TV removes the biggest variable entirely.
- Check what else is using the connection.Cloud backups, game updates, other streams. Pause them and retest — background traffic is a common cause of evening buffering.
- Switch to the 5GHz band if the device is near the router. It is considerably faster for video. If the device is far away, 2.4GHz may be more stable despite being slower.
- Test your actual speed on that device.HD needs roughly 5Mbps, 4K around 25Mbps. If you are getting far less at the TV, the home network is the bottleneck.
- Check whether the service itself is having problems.A status page or a quick search. If a popular programme has just been released, the service may be struggling rather than your connection.
- Lower the streaming quality as a workaround. Most services let you cap the resolution. Uninterrupted HD is better than buffering 4K.
Tips
- A cheap powerline adapter or a mesh node near the TV usually solves persistent buffering more effectively than upgrading broadband.
- Buffering only in the evening is congestion, either in your home or on the network. It is not a fault with your equipment.
- Older smart TVs have slow processors and dated wifi. A modern streaming stick often outperforms the TV's built-in apps considerably.
Common mistakes
- Upgrading broadband before testing the wifi — If the bottleneck is between the router and the TV, a faster line changes nothing at all.
- Testing speed on a phone next to the router — That tells you nothing about the connection at the TV, which is where the problem is.
- Assuming 4K is always better — 4K needs around five times the bandwidth of HD. Uninterrupted HD is a better experience than stuttering 4K.
Questions people ask
What internet speed do I need for streaming?
Roughly 5Mbps for HD and 25Mbps for 4K, per simultaneous stream. What matters is the speed reaching that device, not the speed of your package.
Why does only my TV buffer when everything else works?
The TV's wifi connection is the weak point — often poor built-in wifi plus a position behind furniture. An ethernet cable or a mesh node nearby usually fixes it.
