Why do my clothes smell even after washing?

Short answer
The machine is almost certainly the problem. Low-temperature washing lets bacteria and detergent residue build up inside it. Run an empty wash at 90°C with no detergent, and clean the seal, drawer and filter.
Modern washing at 30 or 40 degrees is better for clothes and for energy, and it does not kill what builds up inside the machine. That residue is what transfers the smell back onto clean laundry.
Step by step
- Run a hot maintenance wash.Empty, at 90°C or the hottest available, with no detergent or with a machine cleaner. Monthly. This is the main fix and it is what low-temperature washing makes necessary.
- Clean the door seal.Pull back the rubber and look inside. Black mould and trapped debris live there, and it is the most common single source. Wipe it out and dry it after every wash.
- Clean the detergent drawer.Pull it right out and wash it. Detergent and softener residue builds into a sludge that smells and blocks the flow.
- Clean the filter.Usually a small hatch at the front bottom. Put a towel and a shallow tray down first — water comes out. What is in there is frequently unpleasant and frequently the answer.
- Leave the door and drawer open between washes.The single best preventive habit. A sealed damp drum grows exactly what causes the smell.
- Use less detergent, not more.Counter-intuitive and correct. Excess detergent does not rinse out, stays in the fabric and the machine, and feeds the bacteria. Use the stated amount for your water hardness.
- Stop using fabric softener, or use much less.It coats fibres and builds up in the machine, and it reduces absorbency in towels. It is a common contributor to persistent smells.
- Dry washing promptly and properly.Laundry left damp in the machine or on an airer in a cold room develops a musty smell within hours. Get it out and dry it quickly.
Tips
- Wash towels and bedding at 60°C periodically. It is the temperature at which the machine and the fabric both get properly cleaned.
- If the smell is only on synthetic sportswear, that is a different problem — synthetic fibres hold odour and need a dedicated detergent or a vinegar soak.
- Do not leave washing in the drum overnight. A few hours is enough for the smell to return to everything.
