Why is my resin still sticky, bubbly or cloudy?

Five characteristic resin failures — sticky patches, a soft whole piece, bubbles, cloudiness and yellowing — each with a different cause, and an honest account of which can be rescued.

Short answer

Sticky patches mean unmixed resin from the cup wall, and the piece cannot be saved but can often be sealed with a fresh top layer. A soft whole piece means the ratio was wrong and is not recoverable. Bubbles come from fast stirring, cold resin or a porous inclusion. Cloudiness is moisture. Yellowing is heat or age.

Do this first

Every resin fault is set at the mixing stage or by the conditions, and none of them announces itself until hours later when nothing can be changed. Learning to read the fault backwards to its cause is the only way to stop repeating it, because there is very little you can do to a curing pour.

Safety

Uncured resin is a skin sensitiser and every one of the faults below means uncured resin you may be about to handle. Wear nitrile gloves, not latex, when investigating or removing a failed pour, and wash with soap and water rather than solvent. Sanding cured resin produces fine dust that should be created wet or with extraction. Failed pours, contaminated cups and gloves are hazardous waste for a recycling centre.
Mixing casting resin so it cures, and where bubbles come from

Step by step

  1. Establish first whether the fault is local or global.Sticky in patches means a mixing problem and the piece is mostly sound. Soft everywhere means a ratio problem and it is scrap. This one distinction determines whether there is anything to rescue.
  2. Check the ratio method on the label before anything else.Resins state a ratio and whether it is by weight or by volume, and the two numbers differ for the same product. Mixing by the wrong method is the leading cause of a batch that never cures at all.
  3. Record the conditions when a pour fails.Temperature, humidity, the age of the resin, the stirring time and the pour depth. Resin faults repeat, and a note of the conditions is what identifies which variable was responsible.
  4. Test with a small pour when something changes.A new resin, a new mould, a cold workshop or an old bottle. A small test cast costs almost nothing and prevents a large failed pour that is expensive and has to be disposed of as hazardous waste.

Tips

  • Old resin genuinely does go off. Part B in particular yellows and thickens with age and exposure to air. Note the date on the bottle when you open it.
  • A resin that has crystallised in the bottle in cold storage can usually be recovered by standing the sealed bottle in warm water until it clears.
  • Cure time and demould time are different numbers. Demoulded resin often needs several more days before it reaches full hardness and stops marking easily.

Common mistakes

  • Adding extra hardener to make it cure faster — Epoxy is a fixed-ratio reaction, not a catalysed one. Excess hardener does not accelerate anything — it remains as uncured material and produces a permanently soft, sticky piece.
  • Stirring vigorously to mix thoroughly — Fast stirring folds in air that then has to be removed. Slow, thorough stirring for the full stated time mixes just as completely with a fraction of the bubbles.
  • Working in a cold garage — Cold resin is thick, holds bubbles, cures slowly and sometimes does not cure at all. Temperature is the variable people most often ignore and it explains a large share of failed pours.

If it doesn't work

Isolated sticky or gummy patches

Cause: Resin from the cup wall or the bottom corner went in unmixed — Fix: Scrape out the sticky material with a stick, wipe with a little isopropyl alcohol on a cloth, let it dry, then pour a thin fresh sealing layer over the area. The rest of the piece is sound.

The whole piece is soft or rubbery and stays that way

Cause: The ratio was wrong, most often because it was measured by weight against a volume ratio or the other way round — Fix: Not recoverable — the chemistry is wrong throughout. Check which method the label's ratio refers to. Dispose of it as hazardous waste.

Small bubbles throughout the body

Cause: Air whipped in by stirring too fast, or resin too cold and thick to release it — Fix: Stir slowly, warm the sealed bottles in warm water first, let the mixed resin stand a few minutes before pouring, and pour in a thin stream from a low height.

Cause: A porous inclusion such as wood, paper or a dried flower releasing trapped air — Fix: Seal inclusions with a thin coat of resin or a spray sealer and let that cure before casting them.

Bubbles clinging to the mould wall and in undercuts

Cause: Air trapped against the surface when poured — Fix: Release them with a cocktail stick immediately after pouring, and pour into the lowest point of the mould so the resin rises and pushes air ahead of it.

Milky or cloudy resin

Cause: Moisture — a damp mould, humid air, or a wet inclusion — Fix: Dry the mould completely, avoid pouring on a damp day, and dry inclusions thoroughly. Cloudiness cannot be cleared once cured.

The piece has yellowed

Cause: Overheating during a deep pour, UV exposure over time, or old resin — Fix: Pour in thinner layers or use a deep-pour formulation. For UV yellowing, choose a resin with UV inhibitors and keep the piece out of direct sunlight.

The cured surface is tacky all over but the body is hard

Cause: Amine blush — moisture and carbon dioxide reacting with the surface in humid or cold conditions — Fix: Wash the surface with warm soapy water, dry it, and apply a thin fresh coat in warmer, drier conditions.

The piece cracked or warped

Cause: Exothermic heat in a thick pour, or demoulded too early — Fix: Respect the maximum pour depth, cure at the recommended temperature, and wait the full demould time. Full hardness takes days beyond demoulding.

It will not come out of the mould

Cause: Not fully cured, or a mould material that needs a release agent — Fix: Wait longer. Silicone moulds release without agents; anything else usually needs one. Flexing a silicone mould from the edges rather than pulling the piece works best.

Questions people ask

Can I sand and polish out a fault?

Surface bubbles, minor cloudiness at the surface and a slightly rough finish all sand and polish out through progressively finer grits. Anything inside the casting is permanent. Sand wet to control the dust.

Can I pour fresh resin over a failed layer?

Over a cured layer, yes, and it bonds well if the surface is clean and lightly keyed. Over sticky uncured resin, no — remove the uncured material first or the new layer will never harden properly either.

Is a failed resin piece safe to keep?

A permanently sticky piece is uncured resin and is a sensitiser on contact. Do not keep it, do not let children handle it, and dispose of it as hazardous waste.
