Why is there ice on the back wall of my fridge?
A film of frost that comes and goes on the back wall is normal — a permanent sheet of ice means the fridge is over-cooling, a seal is leaking, or the drain behind it has blocked.

Short answer
Frost that appears while the compressor runs and melts away afterwards is normal: the back wall is the cooling surface. A hard sheet that never melts means something else — the thermostat set too cold, a door seal leaking, the door left ajar, or a blocked drain hole causing meltwater to refreeze instead of draining away.
The back wall of a fridge is where the cooling happens, so it is the coldest surface in the cabinet and moisture in the air condenses and freezes onto it every time the compressor runs. Between cycles it warms above freezing, the frost melts, and the water runs down a channel to a small drain hole and out to a tray above the compressor where it evaporates. That cycle is the design. Permanent ice means one part of it has broken.

Step by step
- Establish whether the frost is permanent or cyclical.Look at the back wall twice, four hours apart. Frost that appears and disappears is the appliance working normally. A sheet of ice that is there every time you look is a fault.
- Check nothing is touching the back wall.Food, packaging or a plastic bag pressed against the cooling panel freezes to it and stops that patch defrosting between cycles, so ice builds outwards from it. Leave a gap at the back of every shelf.
- Check the thermostat setting and measure the real temperature.A fridge set colder than it needs to be spends more time cooling and less time defrosting, so frost accumulates faster than it clears. Measure with a thermometer and target 4-5°C rather than trusting the dial.
- Run the paper test on the door seal.A leaking seal admits warm humid air continuously. That moisture goes straight to the coldest surface, which is the back wall, and freezes there. Clean the seal first, then test every 100mm around all four sides.
- Check the door is closing and the appliance is level.An overfilled door bin, a bottle sticking out, or a fridge tilted forward will leave the door slightly open. Most appliances should sit very slightly tilted back so the door self-closes.
- Find the drain hole and clear it.A small dimple in the centre at the base of the back wall, at the bottom of the frost channel, sometimes with a plastic peg in it. Clear it gently with a cotton bud and flush it with warm water. A blocked drain means meltwater sits in the channel and refreezes each cycle, building ice from the bottom up.
- Defrost the fridge fully once the cause is found.Empty it, switch it off at the socket, and leave the door open with towels down for a few hours. Do not use anything sharp and do not use a heat gun. A hairdryer on a low setting, kept moving and well away from the water, will speed it up.
- Watch how quickly the ice comes back.If it returns within a week, the cause is still active — go back to the seal, the door, the setting and the drain. If it stays clear, you have found it.
- Suspect the thermostat or the defrost circuit if nothing else explains it.A thermostat that no longer switches off, or a failed defrost sensor, keeps the back wall permanently below freezing. Both are engineer diagnoses and both are repairable component faults rather than terminal ones.
Common mistakes
- Chipping the ice off with a knife — The evaporator pipework is immediately behind that panel. A puncture releases the refrigerant, ends the appliance, and vents flammable gas into the kitchen on modern models.
- Treating recurring back-wall ice as normal — It costs efficiency, it eventually blocks the drain and floods the salad drawer, and it usually indicates a seal or thermostat problem that will get worse.

Cause: Normal operation — the back wall is the evaporator — Fix: Nothing to do. Keep food off the panel and it will not become a problem.
Ice on the back wall and water pooling in the salad drawer
Cause: The drain hole is blocked and meltwater has nowhere to go — Fix: Clear and flush the drain hole. This combination of symptoms is almost diagnostic on its own.
Ice on the back wall and food freezing on the top shelf
Cause: The fridge is running too cold — Fix: Measure the temperature and adjust to hold 4-5°C. Check the thermostat has not been knocked to maximum.
Ice worst near the door edge of the back wall
Cause: Warm humid air entering past the seal — Fix: Clean and test the seal, check the levelling, and replace the gasket if it fails the paper test.

Why does the back of my fridge get wet rather than icy?
That is the normal cycle working: frost forming while the compressor runs and melting away afterwards. As long as the water runs down to the drain hole rather than pooling in the bottom, nothing is wrong.
Is a fridge with ice on the back still safe to use?
The food is safe as long as the fridge is holding 5°C or below — measure it. But the ice is a symptom, it makes the appliance run harder, and it will eventually block the drain and put water in the bottom of the cabinet.
