How do I fix a radiator to a plasterboard stud wall?
Why cavity fixings are the wrong tool for a radiator, and the two ways to get timber behind the board — before boarding, and afterwards.

Short answer
Fix the brackets into timber, not into plasterboard. If the wall is open, put horizontal noggins between the studs at the bracket heights. If it is already boarded, screw a plywood pattress through the board into two studs and mount the radiator to that. Cavity fixings alone are not adequate for a filled radiator.
Radiator brackets concentrate a large load onto a small number of points, and the load is not static — the radiator is knocked, leaned on, and hung with washing. Plasterboard is a few millimetres of gypsum, and the honest position is that no cavity fixing turns it into a suitable radiator wall. The answer is always timber behind the board.

Step by step
- Establish the radiator's filled weight and its bracket positions.The manufacturer publishes the water content and the bracket centres. Both matter: the weight sets what the fixing has to carry, and the centres set where the timber has to be.
- Set the height before anything else.Radiators normally sit with a clearance above the floor and below a sill so air can circulate, and the pipework has to reach. Establish the finished height, then work back to the bracket heights.
- If the wall is open: fit noggins between the studs.Solid timber of the same depth as the studs, cut tight and fixed with skew nails or screws through angle brackets into each stud. Make them generously taller than the bracket fixing centres so both top and bottom fixings land in solid timber with room to spare.
- If the wall is already boarded: fit a plywood pattress.Cut 18mm plywood to span at least two studs, and screw it through the board into the studs with long screws at close centres. The radiator then fixes to the plywood, which carries load into the frame.
- Record where the timber is.Photograph the noggins before boarding, or mark the pattress edges on the floor. Finding them again later is otherwise a matter of drilling test holes.
- Check for pipes and cables at every fixing position.Radiator pipework comes up inside the wall on many installations, and the wall may also carry cables. A detector, and then drill with care.
- Fix the brackets level and to the correct centres.Radiator brackets are unforgiving: a few millimetres out and the radiator will not sit on both, or it hangs visibly askew. Mark from a single level line, not from each other.
- Hang and check before connecting.Lift the empty radiator on with help and check it sits square, sits fully home on both brackets, and does not rock. Fix any of that now rather than after it is plumbed.
- Leave the plumbing to a plumbing procedure.Connecting, filling, venting, checking for leaks and re-balancing are a separate job with their own guides, and a sealed system also needs repressurising.
Tips
- A towel rail in a bathroom is the same problem in a wetter place, and the pattress should be exterior-grade plywood or the noggins treated.
- Where a radiator has to go on a wall you cannot open and cannot pattress visibly, a full-height plywood panel behind the radiator, decorated to match, is a common and honest solution.
- If the radiator is going where a previous one was, do not assume the old fixings were adequate. Check what is actually behind the board before reusing the positions.
Common mistakes
- Using spring toggles or hollow-wall anchors alone — They spread load over a few millimetres of gypsum. A filled radiator's weight, concentrated at four points, with knocks and leaning added, is well outside what that can carry safely.
- Putting the noggins at the wrong height — Bracket centres are fixed by the radiator. A noggin 50mm out means one row of fixings is in board, which is the same as having no noggin at all. Set the radiator model first.

Can I fix a small radiator with cavity fixings?
Even a small panel radiator holds several litres and is regularly leaned on and hung with washing. The consequence of failure is scalding water on a floor. Fix into timber.
What if the studs are not where the brackets need to be?
That is exactly what a pattress or a noggin is for. Do not move the radiator to suit the studs, and do not put one bracket in a stud and the other in board.
