How do I fix a loose door handle?

Short answer
Most loose handles are just loose fixing screws or a slipped grub screw on the spindle. Tighten both. If the handle spins freely without operating the latch, the spindle has broken or slipped out and needs replacing — a cheap part and a ten-minute job.
A door handle is a lever on a square spindle that passes through the latch. Almost all handle problems are one of three things: the fixing screws working loose, the grub screw that clamps the handle to the spindle backing off, or the spindle itself being too short or broken.

Step by step
- Work out what is loose: the whole handle plate, or just the lever.A loose plate means the fixing screws. A loose or spinning lever means the grub screw or spindle.
- Tighten the two fixing screws through the handle plate.Alternate between them so the plate pulls up square.
- Find the grub screw on the collar of the lever and tighten it with an Allen key.It clamps the lever onto the square spindle. It backs off over time with use.
- If the lever spins without operating the latch, remove the handle and check the spindle.It may have snapped, or be too short to engage both handles properly.
- Replace the spindle if needed — they are sold by size and are inexpensive.Measure the old one, or the door thickness plus the handle depths.
- If the fixing screw holes are stripped, plug them with matchsticks and wood glue and refit.Snap the matchsticks flush and drive the screw into fresh timber.
- Add a dab of threadlock to the grub screw if it keeps working loose.Or a small piece of tape on the spindle to pack it out.

- Check every handle in the house while you have the tools out — they all loosen at roughly the same rate.
- A handle that has dropped so the latch does not retract fully is usually a worn spring in the latch mechanism rather than the handle.
- Buy a spindle slightly longer than needed and cut it down; too short is useless, too long is trimmable.
