Why is my fridge water dispenser or ice maker not working?

Filter, supply, freeze-up and the ice maker's own switches — four causes covering nearly every case, and an overdue filter is the most common by a wide margin.

Short answer

Change the water filter first: they are meant to be replaced every six months and a clogged one is the single most common cause of slow or no water and no ice. Then check the isolating valve is open, check the ice maker is not switched off or its arm not raised, and check the fill tube has not frozen.

A plumbed dispenser and ice maker is a small water system living inside a cold appliance: an inlet valve, a filter, a tank chilled inside the fridge, a dispenser line up through the door, and on the ice maker side a fill tube into a mould with a heater and an ejector. Nearly every fault is a restriction somewhere in that chain or a control that has been switched off, and the ones needing an engineer are a small minority.

Safety

Turn off the appliance's water supply at its isolating valve and unplug the fridge before disconnecting any water line. Never use a self-cutting saddle valve to tap into a supply pipe — they are unreliable and are not accepted practice in the UK. A leak from a water line behind a fridge can run unnoticed under a fitted kitchen for weeks.

Step by step

  1. Change the water filter.Most want replacing every six months. A clogged filter restricts flow to both the dispenser and the ice maker, and the symptom is a slow trickle rather than a clean stop. Check the model number on the old cartridge and follow the twist-and-release method for your appliance.
  2. Purge the system after fitting a new filter.Run three to four litres through the dispenser into a jug and discard it. New filters trap air, which comes out as spluttering, and carbon fines, which come out as grey water. Discard the first two batches of ice as well.
  3. Check the isolating valve on the supply is fully open.Under the sink or wherever the line was taken from. A partly closed valve gives exactly the same slow-flow symptom as a blocked filter and costs nothing to check.
  4. Check the supply line for kinks.The plastic line runs behind the appliance and is easily crushed when the fridge is pushed back. Pull it out and look along the whole run, particularly at the point where it turns to enter the appliance.
  5. Check the ice maker is actually switched on.Many have an on-off switch or a menu setting, and many have a wire feeler arm that stops production when the bin is full. An arm knocked upwards by a bag of peas will stop the ice maker permanently and silently.
  6. Check for a frozen fill tube.The small tube feeding water into the ice mould freezes if the freezer runs colder than it should or if the water flow is slow. A hairdryer on low, kept moving and well away from any standing water, clears it — but find out why it froze, because it will recur.
  7. Check the freezer temperature.Most ice makers need roughly -18°C to cycle properly. A freezer running too warm will not release ice from the mould; one running too cold freezes the fill tube. Measure with a thermometer rather than trusting the display.
  8. Free a jammed ice mould.Ice cubes fused into a block by a partial thaw and refreeze will jam the ejector. Empty the bin, break the block up with your hands outside the appliance, and put the bin back. Never lever at the mould with anything metal.
  9. Give it 24 hours after any fix.Ice makers typically produce a batch every hour or two and take a day to fill a bin from empty. Judging a repair after twenty minutes will tell you nothing.
  10. Call an engineer for the inlet valve, the mould heater or the ejector motor.A solenoid inlet valve that has failed, a mould heater that no longer releases the cubes, or a seized ejector are component faults inside the appliance. They are repairable but they are not owner jobs on a live water and mains system.

Common mistakes

  • Skipping the filter change because the water still tastes fine — The filter clogs mechanically long before taste changes noticeably. Reduced flow starves the ice maker, which is when people conclude the appliance is broken.
  • Using a saddle valve to tap into a pipe for the water supply — They pierce the pipe with a small needle that blocks, corrodes and leaks, and they are not accepted UK practice. Use a proper tee and an isolating valve.

If it doesn't work

Water dispenses slowly, ice production has dropped

Cause: Filter overdue for replacement — Fix: Change it and purge four litres through. This is the answer far more often than anything else.

No water at all, no ice at all, nothing since the fridge was moved

Cause: Supply line kinked or the isolating valve knocked shut — Fix: Check the valve and inspect the whole line for a crush point behind the appliance.

Water works, no ice

Cause: Ice maker switched off, feeler arm raised, or a frozen fill tube — Fix: Check the switch and the arm first, then thaw the fill tube. All three are common and none needs an engineer.

Ice tastes stale or smells of the freezer

Cause: Old ice absorbing odours, or an overdue filter — Fix: Empty the bin completely, change the filter, and discard the first two batches. Ice absorbs smells readily and does not recover.

Water in the dispenser tray or under the appliance

Cause: A leaking line fitting or a failing inlet valve — Fix: Close the isolating valve and stop using the dispenser until the joint is found. Water under a fitted kitchen does more damage than the fault itself.

Do I have to use the manufacturer's filter?

Compatible filters exist and many work well, but fit matters and some appliances check for an authentic cartridge. Check the certification of any alternative and be prepared to go back to the branded one if flow or taste suffers.

How long should a new ice maker take to fill the bin?

Around 24 hours from empty is typical, producing a batch every hour or two. Anything much slower after the filter and supply have been checked is worth investigating.
