How do I fit twin-slot shelving so the shelves are level and the uprights line up?

Short answer
Fix the top screw of the first upright only, let it hang plumb from its own weight, mark and fix the rest. Then set the other uprights from a shelf and a level, never by measuring from the floor. Bracket spacing 400 to 600mm depending on load, and every upright must land on a stud or in masonry.
Twin-slot is the right system for anything that will be reorganised — the shelf heights change with a bracket lift rather than a redrill. It is also the system where a small alignment error becomes very visible, because the slots make any misalignment measurable in whole notches rather than in millimetres.

Step by step
- Plan the upright positions around the structure.Studs at 400 or 600mm centres, or sound masonry. Do not decide the spacing you want and then hope the studs agree — find the studs and design the run to them.
- Scan the whole wall area for cables and pipes.Uprights are long vertical lines of holes, which is exactly the path a cable takes from a socket. Scan the full height of every upright position and treat the zones directly above and beside outlets as suspect regardless of the reading.
- Cut uprights to length before fitting, if needed.A hacksaw, cutting from the bottom so the top slot spacing is preserved. Uprights must all be cut identically or the slots will not line up across the run.
- Fix the first upright by its top screw only.One screw, snug but not tight. The upright will hang plumb from its own weight, which is more accurate than eyeballing a level against a wall that is not flat.

- Space the brackets to suit the load and the board.600mm maximum for general use, 400 to 450mm for books, closer still for anything heavier. Use the span guide rather than the spacing that happens to match the studs.
- Fit brackets in matching slots and check each shelf front to back.Count the notches rather than measuring. Then check each shelf slopes neither forwards nor backwards — brackets not fully seated in their slots are the usual cause.
- Screw the shelf boards down to the brackets.Short screws up through the bracket holes into the underside of the board. It stops boards sliding when something is pulled off a shelf, and it stiffens the whole run.
- Load from the bottom up and check nothing moves.Push and pull the run before trusting it. A twin-slot run that will move does so early.
Tips
- Number the slots from the top of every upright and write the numbers down. Getting shelves level later becomes counting, not measuring.
- Uprights are handed in appearance but not in function — fitting one upside down puts its slots half a pitch out from the rest and nothing will line up.
- For a heavy run, a horizontal timber batten screwed to the studs behind the uprights spreads the load and lets you put the uprights where you want rather than where the studs are.
Common mistakes
- Fixing all the holes in the first upright before checking plumb — Once it is fully fixed the errors are baked in, and the whole run references that first upright.
- Measuring each upright from the floor — Floors are not level and the run will visibly step. Level across from the previous upright instead.
- Spacing uprights to look right rather than to hit studs — Twin-slot loads are concentrated. An upright on plasterboard anchors under a book run is the classic failure.

Cause: One upright fitted upside down, or cut to a different length — Fix: Check the slot pattern at the top of each upright. They must match. Re-cut or re-fit.
A shelf rocks on its brackets
Cause: Brackets not fully seated — twin-slot brackets hook in and then drop down to lock — Fix: Tap each bracket down firmly into its slot until it seats.
The whole run leans away from the wall at the top
Cause: Top fixings pulling out under the outward lever of the loaded shelves — Fix: Unload, refix the tops into studs or masonry, and reduce the shelf depth or add uprights.

How far apart should twin-slot uprights be?
As close as the studs allow, up to 600mm for general use and 400 to 450mm for books. Wider looks tidier and sags more; the board decides, and the span guide gives the numbers.
Can I fit twin-slot to plasterboard with anchors?
For light items only, and even then with heavy-duty metal fixings and low expectations. The correct answer is uprights on studs, or a horizontal batten fixed across several studs with the uprights screwed to it.
Do the shelves need cutting to exactly the run length?
No — a small overhang past the end uprights actually reduces the sag in the middle. Aim for the outer uprights set in from each end of the boards by roughly a tenth of the length.
