How do I fix a headboard to the wall instead of the bed?

Short answer
Decide the height with the mattress in place — the bottom of the headboard should sit 50 to 100mm below the top of the mattress so no gap shows. Then use interlocking Z-brackets, or a French cleat batten screwed across the studs, so the headboard lifts on and off. Fix into studs or masonry with at least four fixings, and check for cables first.
Fixing a headboard to the wall rather than to the bed frame is what makes the arrangement look built-in, and it also solves the two irritations of a bed-mounted board: the bed can be moved for cleaning, and the headboard stops walking away from the wall. The trade-off is that the wall now takes the load, and headboard walls are full of cables.

Step by step
- Set the height with the mattress and bedding in place.Push the bed to the wall and measure from the floor to the top of the made mattress. The bottom edge of the headboard wants to sit 50 to 100mm below that, so no gap shows when pillows shift and nothing falls down the back.
- Check the headboard's own proportions.A headboard typically stands 500 to 700mm above the mattress top for a standard board, more for a tall upholstered one. Hold it up and look before committing to a height.
- Find the studs and design around them.Studs at 400 or 600mm centres. A wide headboard will usually cross two or three, which is ideal. On masonry, avoid mortar joints where you can.
- Scan the whole area for cables.Headboard height is switch-drop height, and bedroom walls also carry wall-light cables that run at exactly this level. Scan the full width plus a margin above and below, treat the reading as one input, and stop if uncertain.
- Choose the mounting system.Interlocking Z-brackets — one half on the headboard, one on the wall — are the standard and they let the board lift off. A French cleat, which is a timber batten with a 45 degree bevel screwed to the wall and a matching one on the board, does the same thing for a wide or heavy board and spreads the load across every stud it crosses.
- Fix the wall half dead level.Use a long spirit level, not a torpedo. Any error is doubled across the width of a wide headboard and it will be obvious against the horizontal line of the bed.
- Use every stud the bracket or cleat crosses.A cleat screwed into three studs is enormously stronger than one into two, and it costs three extra minutes.
- Match the board half to the wall half precisely.Measure from the top of the headboard down to its bracket on both sides. A few millimetres of difference here shows as a tilted board.
- Lift it on with two people.Upholstered headboards are awkward rather than heavy, and dragging one up a wall single-handed marks the fabric and the paint.
- Test it by leaning on it hard.Sit on the bed and lean back with real force, the way you will every night. Nothing should move, creak or open a gap at the top.
Tips
- A French cleat is worth the extra timber on anything over about 1.4m wide. It turns four point loads into a continuous line and it makes the board self-levelling as it drops on.
- Leave a 3 to 5mm gap between the bottom of the headboard and the mattress rather than resting it on the bed, so the mattress can be turned without lifting the board.
- If the wall is plasterboard with studs in the wrong places, a full-width batten screwed across three studs and painted to match, with the cleat on that, is the right answer and it disappears behind the board.
Common mistakes
- Setting the height before the mattress is in place — Mattress depths vary by 150mm or more. A headboard set to a drawing rather than to the actual bed leaves a gap that pillows fall down.
- Fixing into plasterboard with anchors — It is leaned on hard every night, which is a cyclic outward pull. Plasterboard anchors creep under exactly that and the board works loose.
- Using a short level across a wide headboard — A small error over 300mm becomes an obvious tilt over 1.5m, and it sits directly against the horizontal line of the bed where the eye reads it instantly.
- Drilling at headboard height without scanning — That is switch-drop and wall-light height. It is one of the most likely places in a bedroom to find a cable.
If it doesn't work
A gap shows between the headboard and the mattress
Cause: Board mounted too high — Fix: Drop the wall bracket so the board's bottom edge sits 50 to 100mm below the mattress top. Fill and touch in the old holes.
The headboard has worked loose over months
Cause: Fixed into plasterboard, or too few fixings — Fix: Refit onto a French cleat screwed across two or three studs. Do not reuse the failed holes.
The board is not level
Cause: Wall half not level, or brackets at different heights on the board — Fix: Measure the bracket positions from the board's top edge on both sides before blaming the wall.
The headboard drums or rattles against the wall
Cause: Only touching at the brackets — Fix: Self-adhesive felt or foam pads at the bottom corners to close the contact and stop the noise.
