How do I fit a floating shelf so it does not droop at the front?

Short answer
Fix the wall plate dead level into masonry or studs, then drill the board's blind holes with a jig or a drill stand so they are perfectly straight and exactly on the rod spacing. Any droop you see once it is up is permanent, because the rods bend and stay bent — so keep the load light and the shelf shallow.
A floating shelf is a cantilever bolted to another cantilever, with nothing bracing either of them. Every gram on it, and the whole rotation the load creates, passes through two or three steel rods into one plate on the wall. It is the arrangement that gives the cleanest look and the smallest margin for error, and both facts come from the same geometry.

Step by step
- Establish what the wall is before buying anything.Solid masonry or studs are the only acceptable answers for a floating shelf. On dot-and-dab, the fixings must reach through the void into the masonry behind, using screws long enough to do so — a plug expanding inside a 20mm cavity holds nothing.
- Scan for cables and pipes, then scan again wider.The wall plate is long and horizontal, which is exactly the orientation that crosses cable routes. Cables run vertically and horizontally from every socket and switch. Treat a clear reading as encouraging, not as proof, and if you are drilling above or beside an outlet, stop and reconsider the position.
- Mark a level line for the plate and check it with a long level.Not a torpedo level. Any error in the plate is doubled at the front of the shelf, so a millimetre out over the plate becomes visible across the shelf.
- Fix the plate using every hole it has.Into masonry with correctly sized plugs, or into studs with long screws. The plate carries the whole load and the whole tipping moment, so a single missed fixing matters more here than on any bracket.
- Check the rods are square to the wall in both planes.Hold a level along a rod. A rod pointing slightly downwards gives a shelf that never sits level, and a rod pointing slightly sideways stops the board going on at all.
- Transfer the rod positions to the board exactly.Offer the board up against the rod ends and mark, or measure the plate and copy the spacing. Tape across the back edge and mark on the tape for accuracy. Two millimetres of error and the board will not go on.
- Drill the blind holes dead straight.Use a drill stand or a dowelling jig. Freehand drilling into the edge of a board wanders, and a hole a couple of degrees low gives a shelf that droops from the moment it goes on. Drill 5mm deeper than the rod length and to a bit size that matches the rod, not a loose fit.
- Dry fit before any glue.Slide the board on. It should go on with hand pressure and firm taps from a rubber mallet through a block. If it fights, do not force it — ease the holes rather than splitting the board.
- Fix the board to the rods.Most kits have grub screws through the underside into the rods, which is the correct method because it can be undone. Where the kit relies on adhesive, use it sparingly and accept that the shelf is then permanent.
- Load it lightly and check the front edge with a level.Any droop that appears under load will not come back out. If you see it, take the load off and treat the shelf as too small for that job.
Tips
- Deeper floating shelves are much worse than deeper bracketed ones. Keep the projection beyond the rod ends short — the rods should reach at least half the shelf depth.
- A thicker board is not the answer to a droop. The bend is in the rods, not the board.
- Fitting the wall plate slightly high — a fraction of a millimetre of upward pitch on the rods — leaves the shelf level once the inevitable settlement happens.
- If the wall is plasterboard with no stud where the shelf must go, fit a timber batten across two studs, plate the batten, and box the batten in. That is a genuine answer; a heavier anchor is not.
Common mistakes
- Drilling the board holes freehand — The bit wanders in a board edge. A hole two degrees low guarantees a droop that no amount of adjustment at the wall will remove.
- Fixing the plate into plasterboard with heavy-duty anchors — The load on a floating shelf plate is almost entirely an outward pull at the top and it is concentrated on very few points. Plasterboard anchors are rated for far gentler service.
- Treating a floating shelf as a book shelf — The rods bend permanently. A run of books puts a droop in it in the first week and it never comes out.
If it doesn't work
The board will not slide onto the rods
Cause: Hole spacing or hole angle is out — Fix: Check spacing against the plate. Enlarge the offending hole slightly with a round file rather than forcing the board, which splits the edge.
The shelf droops at the front from day one
Cause: Holes drilled at a downward angle, or the plate is not level — Fix: Check the plate with a long level first, because that is the cheaper fix. If the plate is true, the holes are wrong and the board needs redrilling or replacing.
The shelf drooped after a few weeks
Cause: Overloaded — the rods have taken a permanent set — Fix: Unload it. Replace the rods if the kit allows, and reduce the load. A shelf that has drooped once will droop faster next time.
The whole shelf has pulled away at the top of the plate
Cause: Fixings into inadequate material — Fix: Take it down immediately. Refix into masonry or studs, or fit a batten across studs. Do not retighten.
Questions people ask
How much can a floating shelf hold?
Far less than a bracketed one. Treat a typical domestic kit as suitable for light display items and a few kilograms, and read the manufacturer's figure as an ideal-conditions maximum to be halved. If you want books, use brackets.
Can I make my own floating shelf from a solid board?
Yes, and it is a good approach: drill the back edge for steel rods set into a batten or directly into the wall. The rules do not change — straight holes, generous rod engagement, masonry or studs.
Is there a floating shelf that works in plasterboard?
Not honestly. The right answer on plasterboard is a batten fixed across studs, with the shelf built off it — or ordinary brackets landing on studs. There is no anchor that turns a plasterboard wall into a good host for a cantilever.
