Why has my fingerprint or face unlock stopped working?
Biometric sign-in that has stopped, on a laptop or a phone. The situations where it is switched off deliberately, the physical causes people never consider, and when re-enrolling is the answer.

Short answer
First check whether the device has deliberately refused rather than failed: both phones and laptops demand the passcode after a restart, after several failed attempts, after a period of not being used, and after certain updates. If it is genuinely failing, clean the sensor, then delete the stored fingerprint or face and enrol it again — an enrolment made with a dry hand in winter or with glasses on does not match the same finger or face in different conditions.
Biometric sign-in is a convenience layer sitting on top of a passcode, never a replacement for it, and it is deliberately withdrawn in circumstances where the device wants proof that you are you rather than proof that a finger is present. That design is why so many "my fingerprint has stopped working" reports are not faults at all. The genuine failures divide neatly: the sensor is dirty or physically obstructed, the enrolment was poor, the operating system has lost the stored template, or the hardware has failed — and they can be told apart in a few minutes.
Step by step
- Rule out a deliberate refusal.Both platforms require the passcode after a restart, after five failed biometric attempts, after two days without use on some devices, after a software update, and when a remote lock has been triggered. None of these are faults. If it works again after one successful passcode entry, that was all it was.
- Clean the sensor and, on a phone, the screen protector.Fingerprint readers are optical or capacitive and both are defeated by grease and moisture. Under-screen readers on phones are frequently broken by a thick or badly fitted screen protector, and by protectors sold as compatible that are not. Removing it is the test.
- Look at your own hands and face.Cold, dry, wet or recently washed hands read very differently, and this is the reason winter produces a wave of fingerprint failures. Face recognition is affected by heavy glasses, a hat pulled low, strong backlighting, and having enrolled in a completely different lighting condition.
- Enrol the same finger twice.Most systems allow several stored prints, and enrolling one finger twice — once in the position you naturally use and once at a different angle — improves reliability more than anything else. Enrol the fingers you actually use, including the one you use when the laptop is on your lap.
- Delete and re-enrol if it has degraded over time.Stored templates can become stale, and a poor original enrolment gets worse as the device adapts. Removing all stored prints or the stored face and starting again is quick and fixes a large share of gradual degradation.
- On a Windows laptop, check the sign-in options and the driver.Windows Hello can be blocked by a policy, by the machine being joined to a work account, or by a broken biometric driver. In Device Manager, look under biometric devices for a warning, and reinstall the driver from the laptop manufacturer's site rather than a generic one.
- Check whether an update changed the rules.Updates have repeatedly tightened biometric requirements, and banking and authenticator applications set their own separate policies. An app that suddenly demands a passcode while the system unlock still works is enforcing its own rule, not reporting a fault.
- Distinguish a failed sensor from a failed match."Try again" or "finger not recognised" means the sensor is working and the match failed. "Fingerprint unavailable", the option disappearing entirely from settings, or an error naming the hardware means the sensor itself has failed — and on a laptop that is a repair, while an external fingerprint reader is a cheap workaround.
Common mistakes
- Assuming a passcode prompt means the sensor has failed — Both platforms demand a passcode routinely and by design. One successful passcode entry restores biometrics, and treating that as a fault leads people to reset devices unnecessarily.
- Enrolling only one finger, in one position — You use different fingers and angles depending on where the device is. Two or three enrolments of the fingers you actually use is the single biggest reliability improvement available.
- Setting a weak passcode because biometrics are convenient — The passcode is the real key — biometrics are a shortcut to it, and every prompt described above falls back to it. A four-digit code protecting a phone that holds your bank and your email is the weak link.
If it doesn't work
Works normally, then demands the passcode after a restart
Cause: By design — Fix: Both platforms require the passcode on the first unlock after a restart, because the biometric keys are not available until the device has been unlocked once. Nothing to fix.
Stopped working after fitting a screen protector
Cause: The protector is blocking an under-screen sensor — Fix: Remove it and test. If it works, either go without, buy one certified for under-display sensors, or re-enrol with the protector fitted — which sometimes works and sometimes does not.
Fails constantly in winter, fine in summer
Cause: Dry skin — Fix: Enrol the same finger again in the dry condition, as a second stored print. Moisturising helps more than it sounds like it should.
Face unlock fails with sunglasses or in a car
Cause: The sensor cannot see the features it needs, or is dazzled — Fix: Some systems have an alternative appearance option worth enrolling. Strong sun through a windscreen defeats infrared sensors and there is no setting for that.
The option has vanished from settings entirely
Cause: Driver failure, a policy, or hardware — Fix: On Windows check Device Manager and reinstall the biometric driver. On a work device, an administrator policy can remove it and only they can restore it.
Banking app refuses biometrics while the device unlock works
Cause: The app's own security policy — Fix: Apps can require re-registration after a device change, a reinstall or a new enrolment. Re-enable biometrics inside the app's own settings.

Is a fingerprint less secure than a password?
It is a different trade-off. Biometrics resist shoulder-surfing and guessing, and they encourage people to set a strong underlying passcode because they rarely type it. They are weaker against someone who has physical access and can compel you. For most people the honest answer is that biometrics plus a strong passcode is safer in practice than a weak passcode typed twenty times a day.
Where is my fingerprint stored?
On the device, in a dedicated secure area of the chip, as a mathematical template rather than an image — and it does not leave the device or go to the manufacturer. That is true of Windows Hello, Apple's Touch ID and Face ID, and mainstream Android implementations.
Why does my laptop's face unlock work in the dark?
Windows Hello face recognition uses an infrared camera rather than the ordinary webcam, which is why it works in the dark and why it cannot be fooled by a photograph. A laptop with only a plain webcam does not offer face unlock at all.
Can I add someone else's fingerprint?
Technically yes on most systems, and it is worth thinking about carefully. Anyone enrolled can unlock the device completely, including payment applications. A shared household tablet is a reasonable case; a phone holding your banking is not.
