Why does my filler keep falling out of the hole?
Filler that drops out was never gripped by the hole. Undercut edges, dust and the wrong filler for the depth are the three reasons, and all are fixed before the filler comes out of the tub.

Short answer
A hole with clean straight sides and dust in it gives filler nothing to hold. Rake the edges back to firm material, undercut them slightly so the hole is wider inside than at the face, brush and vacuum the dust out, and dampen the surface if the filler calls for it. Deep holes must be filled in layers.
This is different from filler that cracks or sinks, which GuideHQ covers separately — those are about shrinkage. Filler that falls out entirely is a mechanical failure: nothing was holding it in. It is most common in old plaster, in the crumbly edges of a hole where a fixing pulled out, and in anything deeper than about a centimetre.
Step by step
- Rake the hole back until the edges are firm.Run a scraper or the corner of a filling knife round the inside. Anything that comes away was going to come away later with your repair attached to it. Keep going until the edge stops crumbling.
- Undercut the edges so the hole is wider inside than out.This is the step that matters most and the one almost nobody does. A hole with a slightly larger cavity behind the face traps the filler mechanically — it cannot fall out forwards. A straight-sided or, worse, a funnel-shaped hole relies entirely on adhesion.
- Get the dust out properly.Brush it, then vacuum it. Dust acts as a release agent: the filler bonds to a layer of powder, and the powder is not bonded to anything.
- Dampen the surface if the filler is a powder type.Dry old plaster pulls the water out of the filler before it can set, leaving a weak, powdery repair that falls out. A light mist of water first stops that. Check what your filler expects.
- Fill deep holes in layers, not in one go.Beyond roughly a centimetre, most fillers shrink and crack as they dry, and the mass never cures properly in the middle. Build up in layers, letting each set before the next.
- Press the filler in rather than laying it over.Work the first layer firmly into the back and sides of the hole with the knife so no air is trapped behind it. A void behind the repair is where the next failure starts.
- Use the right product for a deep or structural hole.Very deep holes, or holes where something will be fixed back into them, want a repair mortar or a bonding compound rather than a fine surface filler. Fine filler is for the last few millimetres.
- Let it cure before sanding.Sanding a filler that has dried at the surface but not through it drags the soft material out and reopens the hole.
If it doesn't work
The repair fell out in one clean lump.
Cause: No mechanical key — straight or funnel-shaped sides, or dust preventing adhesion. — Fix: Undercut the edges and clean the hole out properly before refilling.
The filler is powdery and crumbles when touched.
Cause: The substrate drew the water out before the filler could set. — Fix: Dampen the hole first, or use a ready-mixed filler that does not depend on retained water.
It fell out and took plaster with it.
Cause: The surrounding plaster is blown or loose, not just the hole. — Fix: Tap around the area. A hollow sound means a larger area needs removing — see the guide on blown plaster.
Questions people ask
How deep can I fill in one go?
It depends on the product, and the tub will say. As a general rule, treat about a centimetre as the limit for fine surface fillers and build up in layers beyond that.
Can I fill a hole where a wall plug pulled out?
Yes, but do not fix back into fine filler — it has no strength. Use a repair mortar or a proper plasterboard repair, or move the fixing to sound material.
