What wear layer thickness do I need on engineered wood flooring?
The wear layer is the only real timber on an engineered board and it is the entire refinishing budget of the floor. What each thickness band realistically buys you, and where the money is better spent elsewhere.

Short answer
The wear layer is the solid timber lamella on top of the plywood core, and it is the only part that can ever be sanded. Thin layers around 2mm allow roughly one careful sanding. Thicker layers of 4mm and above allow two or three and behave much more like solid wood. Below about 2mm, treat the floor as a wear item rather than a refinishable one.
Engineered wood is quoted with two numbers — overall thickness and wear layer thickness — and buyers usually compare the first. The second is the one that matters, because the overall thickness is mostly plywood core and the wear layer is the only wood you will ever see or be able to renew.

- Read the specification, not the description.Words like real wood top layer and thick veneer mean nothing. The number is quoted in millimetres and it should be stated clearly. If a retailer cannot give it, that is informative in itself.
- Match the thickness to how long you want the floor to last.Around 2mm: a floor you will replace rather than refinish, suitable for a rental, a room with a short design life or a tight budget. Around 3mm: one sanding, comfortably. Around 4 to 6mm: two or three sandings, and a floor that will outlast several decorating cycles.
- Weigh it against how the floor will be used.A hallway, a kitchen and a house with dogs put damage into the surface. That is exactly where refinishing capacity is worth paying for, and exactly where a 2mm layer is a false economy.
- Check what the wear layer is made of.The species matters as much as the thickness for how the floor takes damage. A soft species in a thick layer still dents; a hard species in a thin one still cannot be sanded twice.
- Look at the overall thickness for a different reason.Overall thickness affects stability, how the board sits over an uneven subfloor, the click profile strength, whether it can be secret-nailed or glued down, and the floor height at doorways. It is a real specification, just not the refinishing one.
- Check the core.A multi-ply core with many thin layers is more stable than a three-layer core with a softwood middle, which matters over underfloor heating and in rooms with big humidity swings. Cheap engineered board sometimes has an HDF core, which behaves more like laminate.
- Sanity check against solid wood.At the top of the engineered range the price approaches solid wood, and solid wood has more sandings in it. Engineered still wins on stability over underfloor heating and on wide boards, but the refinishing argument narrows.
- Measure an existing floor before planning to sand it.Look at a board end at a doorway, a threshold or a ventilation grille. The lamella is visibly different in grain and colour from the ply below it, and you can see how much is left.
Questions people ask
Is a 2mm wear layer bad?
No — it is a specification with a purpose. It gives a genuine timber surface at a modest price for a floor you accept is a wear item. It only becomes a bad decision when it is bought expecting a lifetime floor.
Can a wear layer be planed or scraped rather than sanded?
Hand scraping and buffing take off far less material than a drum sander and can rescue a thin-layer floor from light damage. It is slow and it is not a substitute for a proper sanding when one is genuinely needed.
Does a thicker wear layer feel different underfoot?
Not noticeably. What changes the feel underfoot is the total board thickness, the underlay and the flatness of the subfloor, not the lamella.
