How do I drill into render or pebbledash without cracking it?
Render is a brittle shell over the wall, and the drilling technique that works in brick is exactly what cracks it — the two-stage method that does not.

Short answer
Turn hammer action off until you are through the render, then switch it on for the masonry behind. Start slowly through masking tape, keep the drill square, and use a bit slightly undersized for the render layer if it is soft. Never let percussion loose on the surface coat.
Render, roughcast and pebbledash are thin brittle layers bonded to the wall behind, often with a weaker bond than people assume. Percussion at the surface makes the layer flex against a hard backing, and it cracks and debonds around the hole — sometimes lifting a patch far larger than the hole itself. The damage is very visible and awkward to repair invisibly.

Step by step
- Work out what the render is over.Solid brick, blockwork, or in some houses insulation boards with a thin render coat over them. External wall insulation systems are the important case — the render is over polystyrene or mineral wool, and an ordinary fixing has nothing to hold. Tap the wall: hollow means insulation.
- Mark through masking tape.Two strips crossed over the spot. It stops the bit skating on a hard smooth render and reduces chipping at the rim as the bit enters.
- Start with hammer action off.Rotary only, low speed, and let the bit cut its way through the render coat. This is the whole technique — percussion is what fractures the shell.
- Feel for the change.The render will be noticeably harder or softer than the wall behind it, and you will feel and hear the transition. That is your cue to change settings.
- Switch hammer on for the masonry.Once the tip is fully into brick or block behind the render, percussion is fine and necessary. The render around the hole is now supported by the bit and much less likely to spall.
- Keep the drill square throughout.Any wobble levers against the brittle render and opens a crack. Sight from two directions before you start, and do not lever the drill to change direction mid-hole.
- Handle pebbledash gently at the surface.The aggregate is loose in a soft bed. Start the bit between stones rather than on one, or knock a single stone out with a punch first, or the bit will deflect and drag a patch of dash away.
- Seal the fixing when you finish.Any hole through render is a water path into the wall. A bead of exterior sealant around the fixing, or a proper fixing with a sealing washer, and the fixing itself angled so water does not run in.
Tips
- If the tapping test sounds hollow over a large area, the render may already be debonded from the wall. Drilling there will make it worse and the fixing will not hold — find a sound area.
- For anything heavy on a rendered wall, the fixing must reach well into the masonry behind, not just into the render. Render carries no meaningful load.
- A rendered wall over external insulation needs purpose-made insulation fixings or a fixing long enough to reach the structural wall. This is a case where the wrong fixing simply pulls out.
Common mistakes
- Starting on hammer setting because it is an outside wall — The percussion goes into a thin brittle layer with nothing to absorb it, and it cracks and debonds the render around the hole.
- Fixing into the render alone — Render is a finish, not a structure. Anything with weight on it will pull the render off the wall along with the fixing.
- Leaving the hole unsealed — A rendered wall relies on an unbroken surface to shed water. Every unsealed penetration is a route in, and the damp appears inside months later.

How thick is render usually?
Traditional sand and cement render is commonly applied in two coats totalling something in the range of 15 to 25mm, but it varies. The reliable method is to feel for the change in material rather than to assume a depth.
What if the render cracks anyway?
A small chip round a hole is usually hidden by the fixing's plate or washer. A larger crack needs cutting out and patching, and a patch never quite matches — which is why the technique matters.
Can I drill into a rendered wall that has external insulation?
You can, but the fixing must reach the structural wall behind the insulation, which means a much longer fixing designed for the purpose. Standard plugs into the render will fail.
