Why do my dovetails have gaps?
The five places a dovetail gap comes from, how to tell which one you have from where the gap is, and what can honestly be repaired.

Short answer
Where the gap is tells you the cause. Gaps at the pin tips mean you sawed outside the line on the pin board. Gaps along the baseline mean the shoulders were not cut to a single gauge line. Gaps that open only on one face mean the saw drifted out of vertical. Fix the marking and sawing; on a finished joint, glue in a grain-matched sliver rather than using filler.
A dovetail gap is a diagnostic, not just a blemish. Each type of gap is produced by one specific error, and once you can read them you stop making the same joint badly twice.
Step by step
- Look at where the gaps are before deciding anything.Photograph the joint, or sketch it. Gaps at the tips of the pins, gaps at the tail roots, gaps along the shoulder line and gaps on one face only are four different faults.
- Gaps at the pin tips on the show face: you sawed wide on the pin board.The knife line transferred from the tails was correct; the saw cut fell on the line or outside it. Saw fully in the waste, leaving the knifed line intact, and pare down to it afterwards.
- Gaps along the whole shoulder line: the baselines do not match.Both boards must be gauged from the same single setting, taken from the mating board's actual thickness. If one board is thicker than the other, or the gauge was reset, the shoulders cannot meet.
- A gap on one face and a tight joint on the other: the saw was not vertical.The cut drifted through the thickness. Cut with the board low in the vice, watch the reflection in the saw plate, and check the sawn faces with a square before you chop the waste.
- Gaps that appeared only after glue-up: the joint was over-fitted.Repeated dry assembly compresses the fibres of the tails. Fit once, and if you must check again, do it with the joint barely started rather than pushed home.
- Uneven gaps around a joint that fits elsewhere: waste left in the corners.A chisel corner cannot reach the internal angle of a socket cleanly. Undercut the baseline slightly in the middle so it can never hold the joint open.
- Repair what is worth repairing, with wood and not filler.Cut a thin wedge of the same species with the grain running the same way as the surrounding wood, glue it in proud, and pare it flush when the glue has set. Done with matching grain it disappears.
- For very fine gaps, close the fibres instead.Tapping the surrounding wood over with a small punch or the pein of a hammer moves the fibres into the gap. It works on tight-grained hardwood and looks better than anything you can fill with.
Tips
- Filler and glue-and-sawdust show up the moment finish goes on, because filled wood absorbs oil and stain differently from the wood beside it.
- Practise on the timber you are going to use. Sawing a straight line in oak and in pine are not the same skill.
- If several joints on a box are all wide in the same direction, the fault is in your stance or your sightline, not in that joint.
Common mistakes
- Sanding a gappy joint hard to blend it in — Sanding rounds the crisp arris of the joint and makes the gap look wider and softer, not smaller. It also dishes the softer growth rings around it.
- Filling with glue and sanding dust — It is darker than the wood when wet and paler when dry, does not take finish the same way, and forms a visible line under any clear coat.
Questions people ask
Are gaps in dovetails actually a strength problem?
Rarely. The joint's strength comes from the long-grain glue surfaces on the tail and pin sides, which are usually intact even when the tips show gaps. It is a cosmetic fault in almost every case — but a gap at the shoulder line means the joint is not pulling up tight, and that is structural.
Is there an acceptable amount of gap?
On workshop furniture, a hairline you have to look for is normal even in good work. On show work, the tips should be tight enough that finish does not pool in them.
