What are the parts of a door and its frame called?

Short answer
The vertical outer members of a door are the stiles — hinge stile and lock stile. The horizontals are the top, lock and bottom rails, and a short vertical between panels is a muntin. The frame is two jambs and a head, with a threshold or cill at an external door, a stop the door closes against, and a strike plate let into the jamb where the latch enters.
This vocabulary is worth ten minutes because it is what every joiner, ironmonger and supplier uses, and because it explains a surprising amount about why doors behave as they do — why the lock is where it is, why a panel cracks, and why you can plane one edge of a door and not another.

- Stiles — the vertical outer members.The hinge stile carries the hinges and the lock stile carries the latch and lock. The lock stile is the one that takes every closing impact and all the wear, which is why it is the edge that gets damaged.
- Rails — the horizontals.Top rail, lock rail or middle rail, and bottom rail. The lock rail sits at handle height, which is exactly why the lock goes there: on a traditional panelled door there is solid timber to cut into at that point and nowhere else.
- Muntins and panels.A muntin is a short vertical dividing panels within a rail. The panels themselves are thinner boards sitting loose in grooves so they can shrink and swell. That is a feature, not a defect, and it is why painting a panel into its groove makes it crack.
- Understand what is inside a modern door.An internal door is often a hollow-core or a lightweight-core flush door with a solid timber lock block on one edge. That lock block is the only place a lock can go, and it is why a lock cannot simply be moved up or down on such a door.
- The frame — jambs, head and threshold.Two vertical jambs and a horizontal head. An external doorway also has a threshold or cill at the bottom, often with a weather bar. The frame is fixed to the structure and it carries every load the door applies.
- The stop and the strike plate.The stop is the strip, or the rebate in a solid frame, that the door closes against. The strike plate or keep is the metal plate let into the jamb that the latch enters. Almost every door that will not latch is a strike plate alignment problem.
- Architrave and the gap behind it.The moulding covering the joint between the frame and the wall. Behind it is packing and the fixings holding the frame to the structure, which is why the architrave has to come off before a frame can be adjusted or refixed.
- See where security actually lives.A high-security cylinder in a frame fixed with two short screws into plaster is not secure. The lock, the strike plate, the frame fixings and the material behind the frame are one system, and the weakest of them is the answer.
Tips
- A door is trimmed on its stiles and rails within limits the maker sets — usually a few millimetres per edge on a flush door, and never through the lock block or the lippings.

- The gap around a door is deliberate. Too tight and it binds in damp weather; too loose and it lets draughts and, on a fire door, smoke through.
Common mistakes
- Planing the hinge stile to cure a binding door — It changes the hinge geometry and usually makes it worse. A binding door is far more often a hinge that has dropped, a screw that has lost its grip, or a frame that has moved.
- Cutting into a hollow-core door away from the lock block — There is nothing there but a cardboard core. A lock or a handle fitted outside the block has nothing to hold it and will pull out.
- Fitting a five-lever lock to a door and leaving the original short frame screws — The frame is now the weak point. Long screws through the strike plate and the keeps into the structure behind are what turns a good lock into a secure door.
If it doesn't work
The door will not latch without being pulled or lifted
Cause: The latch is not meeting the strike plate squarely — Fix: Mark where the latch is hitting with a smear of lipstick or chalk, and adjust the plate or the hinges accordingly. GuideHQ has a guide dedicated to this.
A crack has appeared down a panel of an old door
Cause: The panel has been painted or glued into its grooves and cannot move as it shrinks — Fix: Nothing restores a split panel invisibly. When redecorating, avoid flooding paint into the panel grooves so the panel remains free to move.
The lock stile edge is chewed and splintered
Cause: Years of the door being pushed shut against a misaligned strike plate — Fix: Fix the alignment first, then repair the edge. Repairing the edge alone means doing it again.
Questions people ask
How do I know if a door is a fire door?
Look for a label or a coloured plug in the top or hinge edge, an intumescent seal in a groove around the edge, and considerable weight. If a door is on a protected escape route — typically doors onto the stair enclosure in a loft-converted house — it is likely to be one, and it should not be altered.
What is a lipping?
A strip of solid timber applied to the edge of a flush or veneered door to protect it and to give something to trim. The maker's trimming allowance is the amount of lipping you may remove.
What is the difference between a door lining and a door frame?
A lining is a plain board lining the opening, used internally, with a planted stop nailed on. A frame is a heavier section, usually rebated to form the stop, used externally and for fire doors. The words get used interchangeably and the difference is real.
