Do plant moisture meters actually work?
What a cheap probe meter is really measuring, why it reads wet in dry compost and dry in wet compost, and the free methods that beat it.

Short answer
The cheap unpowered ones measure electrical conductivity between two dissimilar metal prongs, not moisture. Fertiliser salts push the reading up and peat-free compost pushes it down, so they are unreliable in exactly the container situations people buy them for. Use the weight of the pot and a finger instead.
The classic three-zone moisture meter has no battery. The needle is driven by a tiny current generated between two different metals in a conductive medium — which makes it a rough salinity meter with a moisture-shaped dial. In clean water it reads wet, in dry salty compost it can also read wet, and in damp peat-free compost with low nutrient levels it can read dry.
Step by step
- Know what the unpowered meters measure.Conductivity between two probes. Water carries current only if there are dissolved salts in it, so a freshly fed pot reads wetter than an unfed one at the same moisture level.
- Learn the pot-weight method instead.Lift the pot just after a thorough watering and again when it genuinely needs water. The difference is obvious and unambiguous. After a fortnight you will judge any pot in the collection by tipping it with one hand.
- Use a finger for the top of the pot and a stick for the bottom.Push a finger in to the second knuckle. For a deep container, push a bamboo cane or a wooden skewer to the base, pull it out and look — dark and cool means wet, and compost sticking to it means very wet.
- Watch the plant as well as the compost.Slight dulling of leaf colour and a subtle loss of gloss precede wilting by hours. Wilting itself is late, and midday wilting in full sun is often heat rather than drought — check again in the evening before watering.
- Reserve meters for the cases they genuinely suit.A large indoor pot you cannot lift, a plant sensitive to overwatering where you want a second opinion, or a deep planter where the surface tells you nothing. Even then, treat the reading as one input, not a verdict.
- Consider a proper meter if you want a number.Battery-powered capacitance and TDR meters measure the dielectric property of the medium and are genuinely accurate. They cost many times more than the dial type and are aimed at growers rather than gardeners.
Tips
- Clean the probes with a scouring pad before every use. Oxidised probes read low, which is why an old meter suddenly starts saying everything is dry.
- Never leave a probe meter permanently in a pot. The prongs corrode, the readings drift and the corrosion products sit in the root zone.
- The same physics is why cheap meters that also claim to read pH and light should be ignored entirely for those functions.
Common mistakes
- Watering on the meter's say-so without checking the pot — A high salt level after feeding reads as wet, so you skip a watering the plant needed. Low-nutrient peat-free compost reads dry when it is saturated, so you water a pot that is already drowning.
- Testing at the surface only — The top 30mm of any container dries first and fastest. It tells you almost nothing about what the roots at 200mm are experiencing.
Alternatives
- Pot weight: Free, instant and entirely reliable once you have calibrated your own hand on a couple of pots. The method professional growers actually use.
- Wooden skewer or cane: The dipstick method. Works to full depth in any container, costs nothing, and shows you the moisture gradient rather than a single point.
- Capacitance sensor: A powered meter that measures the dielectric constant of the compost. Genuinely accurate and unaffected by salts, but priced for growers and greenhouse automation.
Questions people ask
My meter says wet but the plant is wilting. What is going on?
Most likely the compost has dried into a water-repellent lump and water is running down the sides without wetting it — the meter probe is in a damp channel, the rootball is bone dry. Soak the whole pot in a bucket to rewet it.
Are the app-connected soil sensors any better?
The good ones use capacitance and are far more reliable than a dial meter, but they are designed for a single valuable plant. For a patio of twenty pots they are neither practical nor necessary.
