Do phone cleaner and booster apps actually do anything?

No. On iOS they cannot do what they claim; on Android they duplicate a built-in tool while taking permissions you should not hand out. The genuine wins are elsewhere.

They do not work in any useful sense. On iOS an app cannot reach into other apps' storage at all, so a cleaner physically cannot clear what it advertises. On Android the built-in storage tool already does the safe parts, and 'RAM boosters' actively hurt performance by force-stopping apps the system had deliberately kept in memory. Delete them, and free space by dealing with photos, videos, downloads and messaging media instead.

This category persists because the promise is appealing and the measurement is opaque — a cleaner shows you a big number, does something, and shows you a smaller number, and you have no way to check what happened. It is worth understanding why the claims cannot be true, because the same reasoning tells you what actually does free space.

Cleaner apps ask for extensive permissions — files, storage, accessibility services, usage access — which is exactly the permission set malicious apps want. Several widely installed cleaners have been removed from app stores for adware or data harvesting. Treat any app that promises to speed up or clean your phone as high-risk by default, and be especially wary of ones that arrive through an advert or a pop-up warning that your phone is infected.

  1. Understand the iOS limitation.Every iOS app runs in its own sandbox and cannot read or write another app's storage. A cleaner app therefore cannot see your app caches, let alone remove them. What these apps can access is your photo library and contacts — which is why iOS cleaners are overwhelmingly photo-duplicate-finders and contact-mergers wearing a cleaner's clothes.

Understand the Android limitation.Android does allow more, but modern versions have narrowed file access sharply and the platform already includes a storage manager that finds large files, unused apps and downloaded media. A third-party cleaner does the same job with worse judgement and a much larger permission demand.
  3. Reject the RAM-boosting claim outright.Both platforms are designed to keep recently used apps resident in memory so they resume instantly. Free RAM is wasted RAM. A booster that force-stops those apps makes the next launch slower and costs battery reloading them. The graph goes down; the phone gets worse.
  4. Be sceptical of 'junk files' figures.The number a cleaner shows is usually cache — files the operating system already reclaims automatically under pressure. Removing them early achieves nothing durable and the apps simply rebuild them.
  5. Look at what permissions it asked for.Accessibility services, usage access, all-files access and display-over-other-apps are the permissions that let an app observe or control what you do. A genuine storage tool needs none of them. If a cleaner asked for any, uninstall it and then review the permission lists in settings to check it was actually revoked.

  7. Deal with a slow phone as a separate problem.Slowness is usually a nearly full storage volume, a degraded battery forcing the processor to throttle, an OS version the hardware struggles with, or one misbehaving app. None of those is addressed by cleaning, and each has a real fix.

  • A pop-up in a browser saying your phone is infected and offering a cleaner is always fraudulent. Phones do not scan themselves through web pages. Close the tab; do not tap anything in it.
  • If a cleaner came preinstalled by the phone's manufacturer, it is usually a reskinned version of the same idea. It can normally be disabled even when it cannot be uninstalled.
  • The one legitimate niche is a duplicate-photo finder, and even there review every deletion by hand — near-identical burst shots are not duplicates and the good one is not always the one it picks.

Yes. It runs in the background using battery, it holds permissions that let it observe your usage, and it is a category with a documented history of adware and data collection. There is no compensating benefit.

What about the storage tool built into the phone?

Use it. Both platforms include a storage screen that categorises usage and offers safe recommendations. It is the correct tool, it needs no permissions, and it will not sell your usage data.

How do I remove one properly?

Uninstall it, then check the accessibility settings, the device-admin list on Android, and the notification and permission lists for leftovers. An app that had accessibility access should have lost it on uninstall, but it is worth confirming rather than assuming.
