How do I cut vinyl flooring to fit?

Short answer

Cut it roughly oversized, lay it in place with the excess turned up the walls, then trim down into each corner and scribe along the walls. Never try to cut to the exact size first — vinyl is unforgiving and the room is not square.

Vinyl is the cheapest floor covering to buy and the easiest to ruin, because every cut is final and no room is the shape you think it is.

Safety

A sharp knife cutting a large sheet on the floor is the most common DIY laceration. Change blades often — a blunt blade needs force and slips. Cut away from your body, keep your other hand behind the blade, and never cut towards a hand holding the sheet down.

Step by step

Let the vinyl warm up first.Unrolled and flat in the room for at least 24 hours, ideally warm. Cold vinyl is stiff, cracks at folds and will not lie flat, which makes accurate cutting impossible.
Make a paper template for an awkward room.Tape sheets of paper or cardboard together across the whole floor, trim to fit exactly, then transfer it to the vinyl. For bathrooms and anything with a lot of obstacles it is far more accurate than cutting in place.
Cut oversized to begin with.At least 75mm extra on every side, turned up the walls. Everything after this is trimming down, which you can do gradually — you cannot add material back.
Relieve the internal corners.Cut a straight line down into each internal corner so the sheet drops flat. Until you do, the excess holds the whole sheet off the floor and nothing sits where it should.
Cut external corners with a V.A cut down each side of the corner from the top edge, so the flap folds away. Start short and extend it — a cut too far shows in the finished floor.
Scribe along the walls.Press the vinyl firmly into the wall-floor junction and run a knife or a scribing block along it. A block held against the wall with a pencil at the other end copies an irregular wall accurately.
Change the blade constantly.Every few metres. A blunt blade drags, tears the surface and takes real force, which is when it slips. Blades are cheap.
Cut from the face side with a straight edge.A metal straight edge, several light passes rather than one heavy one. Trying to cut through in a single stroke is what causes wandering cuts and cut hands.
Aim for a small gap, not a tight fit.Two or three millimetres short at the wall. Vinyl expands, and the gap disappears behind the skirting or beading. Cut hard against the wall and it buckles later.
Template pipes and awkward objects.Card around the pipe, transferred to the vinyl, with a slit cut from the nearest edge to slide it around. The slit closes up and is barely visible.
Match the pattern before cutting a second piece.If the room needs two widths, align the pattern first and allow extra for the repeat. This is the most expensive mistake available in vinyl.
Finish the edges properly.Threshold strips at doorways and beading or skirting at the walls. In a bathroom or kitchen, seal the perimeter so water cannot get underneath.

Tips

A paper template turns the worst room in the house into an easy job. It takes an hour and removes almost all the risk.
Cut down into every internal corner before doing anything else. Half of the difficulty people have with sheet vinyl is that it is not lying flat.
Warm vinyl cuts cleanly and cold vinyl tears. If the room is cold, put the heating on for a few hours first.

If it doesn't work

Gap at the wall after cutting

Cause: Cut short, or vinyl not relieved into the corners so it was not sitting flat — Fix: Small gaps hide behind beading. Larger ones need the piece replacing — relieve the corners first next time.

Vinyl buckling after a few weeks

Cause: Cut too tight to the walls with no expansion allowance — Fix: Trim two or three millimetres back at the edges and cover with beading.

Cut line wandering

Cause: Cutting freehand or forcing a blunt blade — Fix: Use a metal straight edge and several light passes with a fresh blade.

Vinyl cracked at a fold

Cause: Cold and stiff when handled — Fix: Warm the room and let it lie flat for 24 hours before working with it. A crack does not recover.
