The cool-down is one of the most confidently recommended and least evidenced parts of an exercise routine. It is worth doing, but for different reasons from the ones usually given.

  1. Know what the evidence does not support.Cooling down has repeatedly failed to show a meaningful reduction in delayed-onset muscle soreness or in injury risk. If you skip it, neither of those is the consequence.
  2. Know where it does help.Returning gradually to rest after hard sustained effort. Stopping abruptly lets blood pool in the legs, which can cause lightheadedness, and this is a real effect rather than a theoretical one.
  3. Scale it to what you did.After a walk or a light session, nothing is needed. After a hard run, a long ride or heavy training, a few minutes of gradually reducing effort is worthwhile.

  7. Do static stretching after, not before.Prolonged static stretching before activity temporarily reduces force output. After is the appropriate time for it, and it is one reason to have a cool-down at all.
  8. Take the chance to check in.A few minutes noticing what felt tight, sore or different. Small problems are more noticeable now than they will be tomorrow.
  9. Drink and eat sensibly.Rehydrate, and eat within a reasonable window after a demanding session. This does more for recovery than the cool-down itself.
  10. Get out of wet kit.Particularly in cold weather. Body temperature drops fast once you stop and damp clothing accelerates it considerably.
  11. Do not feel obliged to stretch everything.Two or three areas that felt tight, held thirty seconds each. A full routine is not necessary and its absence is not why you are sore.
  12. Remember what actually reduces soreness.Building up gradually, sleep, adequate food and time. Soreness after unfamiliar exercise is normal and there is no cool-down that prevents it.
