What is the difference between a quadrant, sliding and pivot shower enclosure?

Short answer

Sliding and quadrant enclosures need no clearance in front, which is why they suit small rooms, but their tracks collect scale and hair. Pivot and bifold doors give a wide clear opening and clean easily but need the swing arc free. Walk-in panels have nothing to go wrong and need the longest tray. Measure the swing before anything else.

Enclosures are sold on appearance and chosen, in practice, by geometry. The tray decides the footprint; the door type decides whether you can actually use the room with the door open; and the frame and track type decide how much of your life you will spend cleaning it. Step by step

  1. Measure the room, not the shower.Mark out the tray footprint on the floor with tape, then stand a broom handle where the door edge would be and swing it. Do that before you look at a single product. Most enclosure regrets are a door arc hitting a basin, a toilet or the room door.
  2. Understand the sliding enclosure.Two or three glass panels running in top and bottom tracks within a square or rectangular frame. Nothing swings out, so it needs zero clearance in front. The bottom track sits on the tray and collects water, soap and hair, and in a hard water area it scales. Best where floor space is genuinely tight.
  3. Understand the quadrant.A curved front between two walls, cutting the corner off diagonally, with sliding doors in the curve. It gives the most usable showering area for the least floor taken, and it is the standard answer for a small bathroom corner. The curved glass and curved track are harder to clean than flat ones and replacement seals are shape-specific.
  4. Understand the offset quadrant.The same idea stretched so one side is longer. It suits a corner that is not square and gives real standing room where a true quadrant would be cramped. Check which hand it is — offset quadrants are handed, and a left-hand tray in a right-hand corner is a returned tray.
  5. Understand the pivot or hinged door.One panel on a hinge or a pivot, in a square or rectangular frame. It gives the widest clear opening of any type, has the fewest parts to fail, and is the easiest to clean because the glass comes right out into the room. It needs the swing arc clear, and that arc is bigger than people estimate.
  6. Understand the bifold.Two leaves that fold inwards, halving the swing of a pivot. It is the compromise where a pivot will not fit and a slider is not wanted. More hinges and more seal joints than either, so more to go wrong and more to clean.
  7. Understand the walk-in panel.A single fixed screen with an open entry beside it and no door at all. Nothing to adjust, nothing to seal except the wall and tray joints, and by far the easiest to clean. It needs a long tray or a properly formed wet-room floor, because water thrown at the open end has to land back inside.
  8. Set the glass thickness before you compare prices.Six millimetre toughened glass is the sensible minimum; eight millimetre is noticeably more solid and is what a good enclosure uses. Four millimetre exists and flexes. All of it must be toughened safety glass — look for the standard etched in a corner.
  9. Check the adjustment range against your walls.Every enclosure has a stated adjustment, usually a couple of centimetres, to take up out-of-plumb walls. Old houses routinely exceed that. Hold a spirit level against both walls and measure the corner before ordering — a wall out by 20mm over 2 metres will defeat most enclosures.
  10. Decide on framed, semi-frameless or frameless.Framed enclosures are the most tolerant of imperfect walls and the cheapest, and the frame collects grime. Frameless looks best, cleans easiest and demands accurate walls and solid fixings. Semi-frameless splits the difference and is what most mid-range enclosures actually are.

Common mistakes

  • Ordering before checking whether the corner is square and the walls are plumb — Enclosures have a small adjustment range. An out-of-square corner in an old house is the single most common reason an enclosure will not seal at the wall.
  • Choosing an offset quadrant without checking the handing — They are handed, and the wrong hand cannot be turned round.
  • Buying a walk-in panel for a tray that is too short — Water thrown at the open end lands on the bathroom floor every single time, and no seal or adjustment fixes it.

Alternatives

  • Wet room with a former and no tray: A tanked floor with a fall to a drain. No tray to crack, no upstand, level access. Needs the floor built for it and proper tanking, and it is a bathroom-out job rather than a swap.
  • Shower over the bath with a screen: Costs a fraction of an enclosure, uses space you already have, and keeps a bath in the house. Worse to shower in and worse to get into.
  • Low-profile tray with a walk-in panel: Near-level access without the tanking of a full wet room. The best compromise where step-in height is a concern.

Questions people ask

Which enclosure is easiest to keep clean?

A walk-in panel, then a pivot door, then a bifold. Anything with a bottom track is the hardest, because the track holds water and hair and cannot be reached properly.

Can I put a sliding enclosure on a quadrant tray?

No. Quadrant trays need a curved enclosure made for that radius. Tray shape and enclosure shape are matched.

Is a frameless enclosure less watertight?

Not inherently, but it is less forgiving. It relies on seals and on accurate installation rather than on a frame channelling water, so a poorly fitted frameless enclosure leaks where a framed one would not.
