Short answer
On moving day take photographs of every meter with the date visible, then give each supplier your move-out date, final readings and a forwarding address. Do not cancel the direct debits until the final bills are settled — cancelling first is what turns a refund into a chase.
Almost every 'I am still being billed for my old house' story starts the same way: the direct debit was cancelled on moving day and no readings were taken. The readings are what fix the boundary between your usage and the next occupier's. Everything else in this process is administrative; that part is evidential.
What you'll need
- A phone camera
- Account numbers for each utility
- A forwarding address
Step by step
- Tell suppliers around two weeks before you move.Energy, water, broadband, and the TV licence if you have one. Early notice means the final bill process starts on time rather than after you have gone.
- Ask what notice each contract needs.Broadband in particular often has a notice period and may have an early termination charge if you are mid-term. Ask whether moving the service is cheaper than cancelling it.
- Photograph every meter on moving day.Gas, electricity, water. Get the serial number and the reading in the same frame where you can, and make sure the photograph is dated by the phone.
- Submit the readings the same day.Online or by phone, with the move-out date. A reading submitted a week later is far easier for a supplier to dispute.
- Give every supplier your forwarding address. This is how the final bill and any refund reach you. It is the step most often skipped, and it is the reason refunds sit unclaimed.
- Leave the direct debits running.Let the final bill be collected or the credit balance refunded through the same mandate. Cancelling early forces a manual refund process that can take months.
- Note the new occupier's details if you have them. Not required, but it speeds up the supplier's handover and reduces the chance of your account being kept open by default.
- Tell the council you are leaving.Council tax — rates in Northern Ireland — is billed per property and a closing account needs your move-out date. Do this separately from registering at the new address.
- Check the final bills against your photographs. If a final bill uses an estimate rather than your reading, send the photograph and ask for it to be reissued.
- Cancel the direct debits once everything is settled. After the final bills are paid and any refund has landed. Then check your bank statement a month later to be sure nothing is still being collected.
Tips
- Photograph the meters even if you have a smart meter. Smart meters are frequently left in a state where the new supplier cannot read them remotely.
- Keep one folder — physical or digital — with every final bill and reading photograph for a year. It ends any later dispute in one email.
- Water is billed differently across companies and some areas are unmetered. Ask what happens at a change of occupancy rather than assuming.
Common mistakes
- Cancelling direct debits on moving day — Any credit balance then has to be refunded manually, and any final bill goes unpaid and can end up in collections against a name and address that no longer match.
- Not leaving a forwarding address — Refunds and final bills are posted. Without an address the refund is unclaimed and the bill escalates without you seeing it.
If it doesn't work
Still being billed months after moving
Cause: The account was never closed, only the payments stopped — Fix: Send the dated meter photographs, the move-out date and, if you have it, evidence of the tenancy or sale ending.
The final bill uses an estimate much higher than your reading
Cause: Your reading was not applied — Fix: Reply with the photograph and ask for a reissued final bill, not a credit adjustment.
A credit balance has not been refunded
Cause: No forwarding address or no bank details on file — Fix: Contact them with both. If it is still unpaid after their complaints process, the Energy Ombudsman can take it.
Questions people ask
Do I need to switch supplier before I leave?
No, and it complicates things. Close the account with the existing supplier and choose freshly at the new property.
What if the new occupier does not set up an account?
Provided you gave your move-out date and final readings, your liability ends there. Keep the evidence — that is what proves it.
Does the TV licence move with me?
A licence covers an address. You can update the address on it, or cancel and claim a refund for whole unused months if you no longer need one.
