Will a climbing plant damage my walls?
What self-clinging climbers actually do to masonry, the difference between exploiting existing damage and causing it, and the situations where the answer genuinely is no, do not plant that there.

Short answer
On sound, well-pointed brickwork, ivy and other self-clinging climbers do very little harm and may even keep the wall drier. On failing pointing, soft render, painted surfaces, dry stone or anything with a crack, they get into the weakness and enlarge it. The real damage climbers do is to gutters, roof tiles, window frames and paintwork, and that is where the sensible restrictions apply.
The question is asked as though there were one answer, and there is not. Long-term studies on masonry have found ivy on sound walls to be broadly benign and in some respects protective, buffering the surface against temperature swings and driving rain. The damage cases are real too, and they are consistently cases where the plant found something already failing, or got somewhere it should never have been allowed.
Step by step
- Establish what is holding the plant onto the wall.Ivy uses short aerial rootlets that secrete an adhesive and grip the surface. Virginia creeper and Boston ivy use adhesive pads on short tendrils. Neither drills into brick — they stick to it. Climbers that twine or need tying in are attached to the support you provided, not to the wall, and are irrelevant to this question.
- Assess the condition of the wall honestly.Sound brick with intact pointing is a hard, unbroken surface with nothing to exploit. Crumbling mortar, spalling brick faces, cracked render, loose pebbledash and flaking paint are all openings, and roots will follow them and widen them as they thicken.
- Accept the rule that follows.Self-clinging climbers rarely cause damage to sound masonry, and reliably worsen damage that is already there. So the question to answer is not "is ivy bad" but "is my wall sound".
- Keep climbers out of the roof and the gutters.This is where genuine expensive damage happens. Growth under tiles lifts them, growth in a gutter blocks it and causes overflow down the wall, and growth into a soffit or a fascia holds moisture against timber. Cut climbers back well below the eaves every year, without exception.
- Keep them off painted surfaces, render and timber.Ivy pads pull paint and soft render off when removed, and stems growing behind a window frame or a downpipe exert real force as they thicken. On these surfaces use a twining climber on a hinged trellis instead.
- Watch what a twiner does to pipework and rails.A twining stem that has wrapped a downpipe, a handrail or a thin post will constrict and eventually crush it as it thickens. This is slow and easy to miss until the pipe splits.
- Remove an unwanted self-clinging climber in the right order.Cut the stems through at the base, wait for the top growth to die and dry out over several weeks, then pull it away. Pulling live ivy off a wall takes pointing, render and paint with it; dead brittle growth releases far more cleanly. The remaining rootlet pads can be scrubbed off with a stiff brush.
- Do not plant vigorous climbers against an old, soft-mortar or listed building without advice.Lime-mortared and historic masonry behaves differently, and conservation guidance for a listed building may restrict what may be planted or fixed against it.
Tips
- Ivy on a wall provides exceptional wildlife value — nesting cover, late nectar when almost nothing else is flowering, and winter berries. On a sound garden wall it is one of the most useful things you can grow.
- The most reliable practical damage from a wall climber is a blocked gutter causing water to run down the wall. An annual cut back below the eaves prevents almost every serious case.
- If you want the look with none of the risk, grow a twiner or a climbing rose on a hinged trellis. It comes off the wall in an afternoon when the wall needs work.
- Ivy growing on a tree is a different question from ivy on a wall, and is covered separately.
Common mistakes
- Ripping established ivy off a wall while it is still alive — The rootlets are stuck fast and take pointing, render and paint with them. Kill it at the base first and let it dry out for several weeks.
- Letting any climber reach the gutters — Blocked gutters overflow down the wall and cause the damp that gets blamed on the plant. Cut back below the eaves annually.
- Planting a self-clinging climber on rendered or painted walls — It will damage the surface both while growing and when removed. Those walls want a trellis and a twiner.
- Assuming a crack appeared because of the ivy — Far more often the crack was there and the plant grew into it. Get the wall assessed rather than assuming the plant is the cause — a structural crack has a structural cause.

Does ivy damage brickwork?
On sound, well-pointed brickwork, generally not — research on masonry has found it broadly neutral or mildly protective. On failing pointing, cracked render or soft stone it enters existing weaknesses and enlarges them, so the state of the wall decides the answer.
Will a climber cause damp inside the house?
A well-maintained climber on a sound wall does not. The damp cases trace to blocked gutters, growth under tiles, or growth holding moisture against timber and window frames — all avoidable by keeping the plant away from the roofline.
Can I grow wisteria on a house?
Yes, and it is a traditional choice, but it becomes extremely heavy and strong. It needs substantial fixings, annual pruning to keep it off the roof and out of the windows, and stems must never be allowed to twine round a downpipe or a rainwater goods bracket.
How do I get rid of ivy already on the wall?
Sever every stem at the base, wait for the top growth to die and become brittle, then pull it away and scrub the remaining pads off with a stiff brush. Dig out or repeatedly cut back the base to stop it regrowing.
